Jenny Lumet (born February 2, 1967)[1][2] is an American actress and screenwriter.[3] She is the daughter of directorSidney Lumet and granddaughter ofLena Horne. Lumet wrote the original screenplay of the 2008Jonathan Demme filmRachel Getting Married[4][5] and has worked on severalStar Trek series.

Early life and education

Lumet was born on February 2, 1967, in New York City. She is the second daughter born to directorSidney Lumet[1] and journalist/writerGail Buckley (Gail Buckley Jones). On her paternal side, she is ofPolish-Jewish ancestry. Her paternal grandfather wasBaruch Lumet, who was aYiddish theatre actor. On her maternal side, she is ofAfrican-American,European andSenegalese descent. Her maternal grandmother was singerLena Horne.[6] In 1984, Lumet graduated fromDalton School.[7]

Career

Lumet began working in the entertainment industry as an actress. She appeared in small roles in two films directed by her father,Deathtrap andRunning on Empty, before playing the role of Nancy Bosch in his 1990 filmQ&A.[8] Lumet wrote the screenplay for the 2008Jonathan Demme film,Rachel Getting Married.[9][10] In 2016, Lumet had aCBS drama with a pilot commitment.[11] Lumet was ascript doctor for the 2017 version ofThe Mummy,[12] and was a drama teacher at theManhattan Country School inNew York City.[9]In 2018, Lumet joined the staff ofStar Trek: Discovery as a consulting producer, and was subsequently promoted to co-executive producer.[13] She co-wrote "Runaway", the first of theShort Treks mini-episodes.[14] More recently, she signed an overall deal with CBS Studios.[15]

Personal life

Lumet was married to actorBobby Cannavale from 1994 until their divorce in 2003.[16] Their son is the actorJake Cannavale.[17] Lumet has a daughter with second husband Alexander Weinstein, whom she married in 2008.[18]

On November 30, 2017, Lumet alleged music producerRussell Simmons sexually assaulted her in 1991.[19] In response, Simmons said his recollection of the sexual incident differed from Lumet's and he was removing himself from leadership positions at his businesses.[12]
