Jasmine Paolini[a] (born 4 January 1996) is an Italian professionaltennis player. She has been ranked world No. 4 in singles by theWTA, the joint-highest-ranked Italian woman in singles (alongsideFrancesca Schiavone), and No. 3 in doubles. She is amajor champion in doubles at the2025 French Open, partneringSara Errani. Representing her country, Jasmine Paolini won anOlympic gold medal in doubles at the2024 Paris Olympics, also with Errani.

Jasmine Paolini has won threeWTA Tour-level singles titles and ten in doubles, including two singles and five doublesWTA 1000 titles. Jasmine Paolini is also a three-time major finalist, contesting thesingles anddoubles finals of the2024 French Open and thesingles final of the2024 Wimbledon Championships. She ledItaly to the2024 and2025Billie Jean King Cup titles, winning theHeart Award for the 2024.

Early life

Jasmine Paolini was born inCastelnuovo di Garfagnana.[5] Her father, Ugo, isItalian and her mother, Jacqueline, is ofGhanaian andPolish descent,[6][7] originally fromŁódź.[5] In 2001, at the age of 5, Jasmine Paolini was introduced to tennis by her father and uncle,[8] and trained at the Mirafiume Tennis Club inBagni di Lucca in her youth.[7]

In 2011, at the age of 15, Jasmine Paolini moved toTirrenia for training.[9][10] Her younger brother, William, also plays tennis.[5]

In January 2013, Jasmine Paolini won her only junior title at the J4 Wilson ITF Junior Classic inBergheim.[11] She made her Junior Grand Slam debut after qualifying for theUS Open later that year. She reached the third round insingles, before losing to eventual finalistTornado Alicia Black.[12] She also reached the third round of theAustralian Open in January 2014.[13]

2015 - 2017: WTA Tour debut, first 100k title

In May 2015, Jasmine Paolini received a wildcard into the main draw of the doubles tournament at theItalian Open withNastassja Burnett. The pair lost in the first round toAlla Kudryavtseva andAnastasia Pavlyuchenkova.[14]

In June 2017, Jasmine Paolini won her first 100k title atMarseille where she defeatedTaylor Townsend,Sara Cakarevic,Anhelina Kalinina,Dalma Gálfi, and top seedTatjana Maria.[15] She made her WTA Tour singles debut in the following month at theSwedish Open but lost in the first round to fifth seedCarla Suárez Navarro.[16][17]

She also entered theGuangzhou International Open and lost in the first round to third seedAnett Kontaveit.[18][19]

2018 - 2020: WTA Tour wins, top 100

After failing to qualify for the2018 Australian Open, Jasmine Paolini represented Italy in theFed Cup against Spain in theWorld Group II and against Belgium in theWorld Group play-offs.[20][21] In April 2018, she recorded her first WTA Tour win at theCopa Colsanitas against qualifierLizette Cabrera.[22][23] The following month, as a lucky loser at thePrague Open, she upset third seedDaria Kasatkina[24] and defeatedAnna Karolína Schmiedlová to reach her first WTA quarterfinal.[25][26]

In May 2019, she made her WTA 1000 singles debut as a wildcard entrant at theItalian Open, but lost in the first round toSofia Kenin.[27] Later that month, she qualified for her first Grand Slam tournament at theFrench Open by defeatingAnna Zaja,Rebecca Šramková, andAllie Kiick in the qualifiers without dropping a set.[28] She then reached the quarterfinals of thePalermo Ladies Open, defeatingLaura Siegemund andIrina-Camelia Begu[29][30] before losing to top seedKiki Bertens.[31] She also qualified for the main draw inGuangzhou[32] and reached the quarterfinals.[33][34] After reaching the final of theTokyo Open in November 2019, Jasmine Paolini reached a new career-high of world No. 96. She was the first Italian to reach the top 100 sinceCamila Giorgi in 2012.[35]

In 2020, Jasmine Paolini entered directly into the main draws of theAustralian Open and theUS Open, but failed to advance past the first round of either.[36][37] She recorded her first WTA 1000 level win at theItalian Open by defeatingAnastasija Sevastova in the first round.[38] At theFrench Open, which was postponed to September due to theCOVID-19 pandemic, Jasmine Paolini recorded her first major win by defeatingAliona Bolsova in the first round.[39][40] She also recorded her first doubles win at a major, partneringVarvara Gracheva and defeatingLyudmyla andNadiia Kichenok in the first round.[41]

2021: Tour singles & doubles titles

At theGippsland Trophy in February 2021, Paolini reached her first WTA 500 third round, defeatingRebecca Marino and tenth seedWang Qiang, before losing to eighth seedKarolína Muchová.[42] She reached her first WTA 125 final atSaint-Malo by defeatingElsa Jacquemot,Nina Stojanović, Anna Karolína Schmiedlová, and Varvara Gracheva, before ultimately losing toViktorija Golubic.[43] She reached her second consecutive second round at theFrench Open with a win overStefanie Vögele.[44]

In June, she won her first WTA 125 title seeded third at theBol Open, defeatingViktória Hrunčáková,Olga Govortsova,Kristína Kučová, top seedAnna Blinkova, and second seedArantxa Rus.[45] The following month, she won her first WTA Tour doubles title at theHamburg European Open, partneringJil Teichmann.[46]

At theSummer Olympics, Jasmine Paolini represented Italy in bothsingles anddoubles. In singles, she lost in the first round to tenth seedPetra Kvitová.[47] In doubles, she and partnerSara Errani, who had entered as alternates, reached the second round by upsetting the eighth-seeded team ofNicole Melichar andAlison Riske.[8][48][49]

In September, she won her first career title at theSlovenia Open in Portorož, defeating sixth seedDayana Yastremska, Anna Kalinskaya, fourth seedSorana Cîrstea, second seedYulia Putintseva, and third seed Alison Riske.[50]

The following month, she reached her first WTA 1000 third round, after qualifying for theIndian Wells Open and defeatingMai Hontama and 14th seedElise Mertens.[51][52] She ended the season by reaching the semifinals of theCourmayeur Ladies Open[53] and the quarterfinals of theLinz Open.[54]

2022: Top 50, first top-10 win

At theMelbourne Summer Set 1, Jasmine Paolini and partner Sara Errani reached the doubles final, but lost to the second-seeded team ofAsia Muhammad andJessica Pegula. Following theAustralian Open, Paolini entered the WTA top 50 for the first time.[55] She reached back-to-back third rounds at theIndian Wells Open, upsetting second seedAryna Sabalenka in the second round for her first top 10 win.[56]

Jasmine Paolini reached back-to-back WTA 250 quarterfinals inPalermo andWarsaw.[57][58] Attempting to defend her title inPortorož, Paolini defeatedTara Würth andKaja Juvan, before losing to eventual championKateřina Siniaková in the quarterfinals.[59] She reached her second WTA final at theTransylvania Open, defeating sixth seedMarta Kostyuk, Dayana Yastremska,Jule Niemeier, and seventh seedWang Xiyu,[60][9] before ultimately losing to qualifier Anna Blinkova.[61][62] She ended her season by winning the 100kTorneig Internacional Els Gorchs.[63]

2023: Italian No. 1, BJK Cup final

Jasmine Paolini's 2023 season started out slow, with first-round exits at theAustralian Open,Dubai,Indian Wells,Miami, andMadrid. She won her second WTA 125 title in May, seeded fourth at theFirenze Ladies Open,[64] and reached the final of theMakarska International Championships the following month.[65] In July, she reached the final at thePalermo Ladies Open as the fourth seed, defeatingArantxa Rus, Dayana Yastremska, top seed Daria Kasatkina, andSara Sorribes Tormo,[66][67] before losing to second seed Zheng Qinwen.[68]

Jasmine Paolini qualified for theCincinnati Open, where she reached the quarterfinals with wins over Marta Kostyuk andCristina Bucșa,[69] and an early retirement byElena Rybakina.[70] The following month, she reached the first WTA 1000 doubles semifinal of her career, partneringMayar Sherif, inGuadalajara.[71]

At theChina Open, Jasmine Paolini reached the third round in singles with wins overBeatriz Haddad Maia andYuan Yue.[72][73] Following this result, she reached a new career-high ranking of No. 31 on 9 October and surpassedElisabetta Cocciaretto as the No. 1 Italian female tennis player.[74] At theZhengzhou Open, she reached the semifinals defeatingMoyuka Uchijima, world No. 10Caroline Garcia, and Laura Siegemund,[75][76] before losing to eventual championZheng Qinwen.[77] The following week, she reached the final of theJasmin Open in both singles and doubles. As the top seed in singles, she defeatedAlizé Cornet,Petra Marčinko, sixth seedLucia Bronzetti, and fourth seedLesia Tsurenko, before losing to second seed and defending champion Elise Mertens.[78] Indoubles, she and partner Sara Errani won the title after saving a match point in the semifinals.[79]

In theBillie Jean King Cup Finals in November, Paolini andTeam Italy defeated teams fromFrance,Germany, andSlovenia, before losing toTeam Canada in the final.[80]

2024: Two major finals, Olympic gold

At theAustralian Open, Paolini reached the fourth round of a major for the first time with wins overDiana Shnaider, Tatjana Maria, and Anna Blinkova,[81][82] before being beaten by fellow first-time fourth rounderAnna Kalinskaya. Despite the loss, she reached a new career-high ranking of 24.[83]

Playing with Sara Errani, she won the doubles title at theLinz Open in February, defeating top seedsNicole Melichar-Martinez andEllen Perez in the final.[84]

InDubai, Jasmine Paolini reached her second quarterfinal at WTA 1000 level, defeating 11th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia,Leylah Fernandez[85] and eighth seedMaria Sakkari. She reached her first final at this level, following a win over Sorana Cîrstea in the semifinals.[86] In the final, she defeated qualifier Anna Kalinskaya to win her first WTA 1000 title, avenging her Australian Open loss earlier in the season.[87][88] As a result, she moved into the top 15 of the rankings on 26 February 2024.[89]

At theIndian Wells Open, Jasmine Paolini reached the fourth round, defeating Tatjana Maria and 21st seed Anna Kalinskaya again, before losing to 28th seedAnastasia Potapova.[90][91] She reached a new career-high ranking of No. 13 after a quarterfinal appearance at thePorsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart, where she defeated compatriot Sara Errani and seventh seedOns Jabeur, before losing to eventual champion Elena Rybakina.[92][93] Following a fourth-round run inMadrid, she rose further to a career-high of No. 12.[94]

Partnering with Sara Errani, Paolini reached the doubles final at theItalian Open[95] and defeated the third-seeded team ofCoco Gauff andErin Routliffe to win her first WTA 1000 doubles title.[96] As a result, she reached the top 25 in doubles on 20 May 2024. Seeded 12th at theFrench Open, Paolini reached a major quarterfinal for the first time with wins overDaria Saville, lucky loserHailey Baptiste, 2019 US Open championBianca Andreescu, andElina Avanesyan.[97][98] She then upset fourth seed Elena Rybakina for her first top-five win at a major.[99][100] In the semifinals, she defeatedMirra Andreeva to reach her first major final,[101][102][103] which she lost to world No. 1, Iga Świątek.[104] With Errani, she also reached thedoubles final, but the pair lost to the fifth-seeded team of Coco Gauff and Kateřina Siniaková.[105]

Having never won a match at the tournament, Paolini, seeded seventh, reached the final atWimbledon, recording wins over Sara Sorribes Tormo,[106]Greet Minnen,[107] Bianca Andreescu,[108]Madison Keys,[109]Emma Navarro,[110][111] andDonna Vekić.[112][113][114] She became the first Italian woman to reach the Wimbledon semifinals in theOpen Era,[115][116] and the first woman to reach both the French Open and Wimbledon finals in the same season sinceSerena Williams in2016.[117][118] Paolini ultimately lost in the final to 31st seed Barbora Krejčíková in three sets.[119] Following her run, she reached a new career-high ranking of world No. 5, on 15 July 2024.[120]

Seeded fourth in singles at the2024 Summer Olympics, she was upset in the third round by world No. 67, Anna Karolína Schmiedlová.[121] Seeded third in doubles, she and Errani won the gold medal, defeating Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider in the final.[122][123]

In October, Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani won the doubles title at theChina Open, defeatingChan Hao-ching andVeronika Kudermetova in the final and becoming the first Italian doubles champions at the tournament.[124] Following the title win, Paolini reached the top 10 in doubles at world No. 9 on 7 October 2024, becoming the only active player at the time, male or female, to be ranked in the top 10 in both singles and doubles.[125] In singles, at the same tournament, Paolini reached the third round, where she lost to 31st seedMagda Linette.[126] At the next WTA 1000, theWuhan Open, on her debut, she reached the singles quarterfinals with wins overYuan Yue[127] and lucky loserErika Andreeva.[128] Paolini lost to fifth seed and eventual runner-up Zheng Qinwen.[129] As a result, she reached a new career-high ranking of world No. 4 tying the record for the highest-ranked Italian singles female player withFrancesca Schiavone on 28 October 2024.[3]

Aged 28, Jasmine Paolini became the second oldest player, afterLi Na, to make their debut at theWTA Finals in November, defeating Elena Rybakina in straight sets in her opening round-robin match.[130] She lost her second match toAryna Sabalenka.[131] Jasmine Paolini was defeated by eventual runner-up Zheng Qinwen in her final round-robin match and subsequently did not progress to the semifinals.[132] Partnering with Sara Errani, she also exited thedoubles in the round-robin stage after compiling a record of one win and two losses.[133]

At theBillie Jean King Cup finals in Spain, Jasmine Paolini defeatedMoyuka Uchijima and then teamed with Sara Errani to overcomeShuko Aoyama andEri Hozumi as Italy won their quarterfinal tie against Japan.[134][135] Italy faced Poland in the semifinals and, after losing her singles match to Iga Świątek, Paolini combined again with Sara Errani to defeatKatarzyna Kawa and Świątek in the decisive doubles and secure a place in the final.[136][137] She then defeatedRebecca Šramková to claim the winning points as Italy overcame Slovakia in the final to take the title.[138][139]

In December, Paolini and Errani were namedWTA Doubles Team of the Year.[140][141]

2025: Rome champion, French Open doubles title

Seeded fourth at theAustralian Open, Jasmine Paolini defeated qualifierWei Sijia[142] andRenata Zarazúa[143] to reach the third round, where she lost to 28th seedElina Svitolina in three sets.[144] Paolini and Errani won their third WTA 1000 doubles title together atDoha, defeatingJiang Xinyu andWu Fang-hsien in the final.[145] The following week, her defense of herDubai Championship title ended in the third round with a loss toSofia Kenin during which she suffered an ankle injury that forced her to withdraw from the doubles competition at the tournament.[146]

At theMiami Open in March, wins over Rebecca Šramková,[147] Ons Jabeur,[148]Naomi Osaka[149] and Magda Linette[150] saw Jasmine Paolini reach the semifinals, where she lost to world No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka.[151] In April, Jasmine Paolini defeated wildcard entrantsEva Lys[152] andJule Niemeier[153] and then overcame fourth seed Coco Gauff[154] to make it through to the semifinals at theStuttgart Open, where her run was once again ended by Aryna Sabalenka.[155] Jasmine Paolini changed tennis coaches at this time. She broke with longtime coachRenzo Furlan (2020 - Apr 2025) and joined withMarc López[156][157]

In May, having never gone beyond the second round inRome, Jasmine Paolini defeatedLulu Sun, Ons Jabeur, and Jeļena Ostapenko to reach the quarterfinals of her home WTA 1000 for the first time. She defeated Diana Shnaider andPeyton Stearns to reach her second WTA 1000 final and first on clay. She defeated Coco Gauff in the final to win her third title, becoming the second Italian woman in the Open Era, afterRaffaella Reggi in1985, and the first to do so when the tournament was at Tier 5 or WTA 1000 level.[158][159] Jasmine Paolini won also the doubles title, defeating Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova in the final, defending the title won the previous year.[160] Jasmine Paolini become the first Italian woman to win both the singles and doubles titles at the tournament in the same year since Raffaella Reggi in1985, and the first woman to win both the singles and doubles titles at the tournament in the same year sinceMonica Seles in1990.[161]

At theFrench Open with her partner Sara Errani, she lifted her first major tournament doubles trophy defeatingAnna Danilina andAleksandra Krunić in the final.[162] In singles, also at the French Open, she reached the fourth round and was defeated by Elina Svitolina for the second successive major tournament.[163]

Moving onto the grass-court season, Jasmine Paolini and Errani were runners-up at theBerlin Open, losingTereza Mihalikova andOlivia Nicholls.[164] The following week, she reached the semifinals at theBad Homburg Open, at which point she lost to Iga Świątek.[165] Jasmine Paolini defeatedAnastasija Sevastova in the first round atWimbledon,[166] before losing her next match toKamilla Rakhimova.[167] After her loss Jasmine Paolini fired her coach Marc Lopez.[168] In July, she announced Italian playerFederico Gaio as her interim coach until theUS Open.[169] Jasmine Paolini then reached the final of theCincinnati Open in August, where she was defeated in straight sets by Iga Świątek.[170]

Playing style

Jasmine Paolini's playing style is dynamic and aggressive, characterized by solidgroundstrokes.[171][172] She uses heavytopspin on her forehand, but hits flat on her backhand.[60][173] Due to her height 163 cm (5 ft 4 in), she has stated, "I wish I was taller, because I couldserve better."[174] However, she possesses great speed and agility, a credit to her shorter stature, allowing her to outmaneuver opponents.[175][176]
