Ivo Grbić (Croatian pronunciation:[ǐːʋoɡř̩bitɕ];[4][5] born 18 January 1996) is a Croatian professionalfootballer who plays as agoalkeeper forSüper Lig clubFatih Karagümrük, on loan fromEFL Championship clubSheffield United.

Club career

Hajduk Split

Born inSplit, Croatia, Grbić moved to theHajduk Split academy aged 9,[6] where he remained for the rest of his youth career. A youth international since the U14 level, he has drawn high praise from experts such asVladimir Beara.[6] At the beginning of the2014–15 season he became the first goalkeeper ofHajduk Split II in theTreća HNL Jug. His first glimpse of first-team football was in October of the same year, when he acted as the reserve goalkeeper, but he only made his debut on 18 April 2015 in the home defeat toRijeka, conceding two goals in the last 10 minutes of the game.[7]

Lokomotiva

After lack of opportunities, Grbić became frustrated about his club status, thus eventually rejecting the contract extension and joiningLokomotiva in summer 2018.[8] He made his debut for Lokomotiva on 28 July 2018 in a 4–0 victory overInter Zaprešić.[9][10] During 2019–20 season, Grbić played a key role in Lokomotiva's run as they finished second in thePrva HNL and theCup, qualifying for theChampions Leaguesecond qualifying round.[8]

Atlético Madrid

On 20 August 2020, Grbić signed a four-year contract withAtlético Madrid in a transfer worth3.5 million, including additional bonuses and a percentage of the next transfer.[11] His first experience away from his homeland.[12] He debuted on 16 December, in aCopa del Rey 3–0 victory overCardassar.[13] At his debut for the club, he maintained a clean sheet.[14]

Loan to Lille

After winning the2020–21 La Liga with Atlético, Grbić was loaned out toFrench championsLille for aseason to get more playing time.[15][16] He made hisLigue 1 debut two days later on 21 August, in a 1–1 draw withSaint-Étienne.[17] Grbić made hisUEFA Champions League debut in agroup stage match on 14 September 2021, in a goalless draw withVfL Wolfsburg.[18]

Sheffield United

On 26 January 2024, Grbić signed forPremier League clubSheffield United for an undisclosed fee.[19] He debuted the next day in a 5–2 defeat in theFA Cup againstBrighton & Hove Albion atBramall Lane.[20] Upon signing, he replacedWes Foderingham as first-choice goalkeeper. He was later dropped from this role after a series of poor performances culminating in a 4-1 loss at home toBurnley.[21]

Loan to Çaykur Rizespor

After being relegated to third-choice goalkeeper following the arrival ofMichael Cooper at the start of the2024–25 season, Grbić joinedSüper Lig clubÇaykur Rizespor on a season-long loan on 9 September 2024.[22] He made his debut on 14 September in a 5-0 away loss toGalatasaray.[23]

On 7 August 2025, Grbić returned to Turkey to joinFatih Karagümrük on a season-long loan deal.[24]

International career

Grbić was capped 23 times for Croatia at youth levels.[25] He was part ofCroatia'sUEFA Under-21 Euro 2019squad. He made only one appearance during the tournament, on 24 June in a 3–3 draw withEngland, when Croatia was already eliminated in thegroup stage.[26]

Grbić received his first call-up for thesenior team on 17 August 2020 for SeptemberNations League fixtures againstPortugal andFrance.[27][28] However, Grbić did not debut until 11 November 2021, when he started in a 7–1 victory overMalta in a2022 World Cup qualifier.[29]

On 9 November 2022, Grbić was named inZlatko Dalić's26-man squad for the2022 FIFA World Cup,[30] where he remained an unused substitute as Croatia finished third.[31]

Personal life

Grbić has namedOliver Kahn as his idol. His father, Josip (died 2016), was the acting president ofHajduk Split during the2010–11 season.[32]
