The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) is an Indian multinationalhospitality company that manages a portfolio of hotels, resorts, jungle safaris, palaces, spas and in-flight catering services. The company is part of India'sTata Group.[6][1] IHCL was founded in 1902 byJamsetji Tata and is headquartered inMumbai where its flagship hotelTaj Mahal Palace Hotel is also located.

IHCL's hotel chains includeTaj, SeleQtions,Vivanta, andGinger. The company also operates TajSATS Air Catering, in a joint venture withSATS of Singapore.[7]

The company was founded by Tata Group founder and industrialistJamshedji Tata.[8] He incorporated Indian Hotels Company Limited in 1899 and registered in 1902.[9] The first hotel of the company was opened — TheTaj Mahal Palace Hotel inColaba neighbourhood ofBombay opened in 1903.[10] It was the first five star hotel in India with modern elevators and Russian carpets.[11]

In 1980 theTaj Group opened their first international hotels: theTaj Sheba Hotel inSana'a,Yemen and the Taj Pamodzi inLusaka,Zambia.[12] IHCL entered the Sri Lankan market with Taj Exotica Bentota andTaj Samudra inColombo.[13] In joint venture withG. V. Krishna Reddy,Taj Hotels formed Taj GVK.[14] IHCL enteredMiddle Eastern market with opening a hotel inDubai — the Taj Palace Hotel Dubai.[15] Next year the company opened three more hotels — the Regent Hotel inMumbai, Rawal-Kot inJaisalmer andUsha Kiran Palace inGwalior.[16][17][18]

The company planned to open hotels inJamshedpur andRanchi.[19]Taj Surya was opened inCoimbatore and later renamed asVivanta.[20]

In May 2017, IHCL announced it was moving all of its hotels under a unique brand, Taj Hotels Palaces Resorts Safaris. The brands Vivanta by Taj and Gateway were merged into a single business unit.[21][22] During the summer of 2017,Cyrus Mistry stated that some of the group's latest costly acquisitions (Sea Rock Hotel,The Pierre in New York,Taj Boston) "destroyed the economic value of the company".[23] The unique brand decision was reversed in 2018.[24]

In April 2018, the group opened its first location inSaudi Arabia through a partnership with the Umm al-Qura construction company.[25] In April 2019, IHCL launched the hotel brand SeleQtions with 12 location openings.[26] In May 2019, IHCL signed a strategic partnership with Singapore's sovereign wealth fundGIC to acquire $600 million worth of hotel assets over three years.[27][28]
