Glascock County is acounty located in theU.S. state ofGeorgia. As of the2020 census, the population was 2,884,[1] making it the fourth-least populous county in Georgia. Thecounty seat isGibson.[2] The county was created on December 19, 1857.[3]

History

The county is named afterThomas Glascock,[4] a soldier in theWar of 1812, general in theFirst Seminole War andU.S. representative.

Geography

According to theU.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 144 square miles (370 km2), of which 144 square miles (370 km2) is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2) (0.5%) is water.[5] It is the fourth-smallest county in Georgia by area, behindClayton,Rockdale, andClarke counties.

The vast majority of Glascock County is located in the UpperOgeechee River sub-basin of the Ogeechee River basin, with just the very northeastern corner of the county, northeast ofState Route 80, located in theBrier Creek sub-basin of theSavannah River basin.[6]

2020 census

As of the2020 census, there were 2,884 people and 726 families residing in the county, and the median age was 44.1 years.[18] Twenty-two point five percent of residents were under the age of 18 and 19.9% of residents were 65 years of age or older; for every 100 females there were 93.8 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 90.3 males age 18 and over.[18]

0.0% of residents lived in urban areas, while 100.0% lived in rural areas.[19]

The racial makeup of the county was 89.8% White, 6.8%Black or African American, 0.0%American Indian and Alaska Native, 0.2%Asian, 0.1%Native Hawaiian andPacific Islander, 0.1% from some other race, and 2.9% fromtwo or more races.Hispanic or Latino residents of any race comprised 1.8% of the population.[20]

The 1,151 households counted by the census included 32.2% with children under the age of 18 living with them and 28.9% with a female householder with no spouse or partner present; about 29.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.[18]

There were 1,403 housing units, of which 18.0% were vacant. Among occupied housing units, 73.5% were owner-occupied and 26.5% were renter-occupied, with a homeowner vacancy rate of 1.7% and a rental vacancy rate of 7.4%.[18]

Politics

Glascock County, a rural, sparsely populated, majority-white county, is arguably the most Republican of Georgia's 159 counties, and one of the most Republican counties in theUnited States, with over 90 percent of voters supportingDonald Trump in2024. In addition, Republican percentages have been in the 80s since2004, and the last Democrat to win the county was GeorgianJimmy Carter in1980. This is despite it being surrounded by Democratic counties.

In the1904 presidential election, Glascock County has the highest proportion, of any county in the nation, of citizens to vote for thePopulist Party, with a total of 69.38%.

For elections to theUnited States House of Representatives, Glascock County is part ofGeorgia's 12th congressional district, currently represented byRick Allen. For elections to theGeorgia State Senate, Glascock County is part ofDistrict 23.[21] For elections to theGeorgia House of Representatives, Glascock County is part ofDistrict 128.[22]
