Gennadiy Mikhailovich Agapov (Russian:Геннадий Михайлович Агапов; 5 December 1933 – 22 July 1999)[1] was a Soviet Russianrace walker. Agapov held the unofficialworld records in both the20 km walk and the50 km walk and placed second in the 50 km walk at the1966 European Championships.
Agapov was Soviet champion in the 50 km walk in 1962, 1965 and 1966.[2] He competed in theOlympic Games inTokyo 1964 andMexico City 1968, both times in the 50 km walk.[1] He placed 12th in Tokyo and failed to finish in Mexico City.[1] At the 1966 European Championships inBudapest he won silver in the 50 km walk, behind defending championAbdon Pamich of Italy.[3][4] Between 1965 and 1972, Agapov set unofficial world records in the 20 km walk, the 50 km walk and the 20,000 m track walk (theInternational Association of Athletics Federations did not ratify official records at the time); with his time of 3:55:36, he was the first man to walk 50 kilometres in less than four hours.[5]
