French football clubs have entered Europeanassociation football competitions since 1955–56 season, whenReims took part in theinaugural European Cup.Marseille became the first French club to win theUEFA Champions League in 1993, although their win was overshadowed bya bribery scandal. The only other French club to win at least amajor trophy in Europe isParis Saint-Germain, who won theCup Winners' Cup in 1996, and theUEFA Champions League,UEFA Super Cup andFIFA Intercontinental Cup in 2025.

Overseas France areas frequently field teams in the Oceania and Caribbean continental cups.

Hienghène Sport fromNew Caledonia won the2019 OFC Champions League and thus qualified for the2019 FIFA Club World Cup, becoming the first-ever French club to participate in theFIFA Club World Cup.

Once has a team from Overseas France reached the semi-finals of a top-tier Caribbean cup, which wasAS Samaritaine fromMartinique in the2021 Caribbean Club Championship, by virtue of which they qualified for the2021 CONCACAF League continental tier 2 tournament.

Club Franciscain fromMartinique won the first edition of the Caribbean tier 2 tournamentCFU Club Shield in the2018 season and then won a playoff to qualify for the2018 CONCACAF League.
