TheFlight of Five Locks on theErie Canal inLockport, New York is astaircase lock constructed to lift or lower a canal boat over theNiagara Escarpment in five stages.
The locks are part of theErie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.[1]
InStairway to Empire: Lockport, the Erie Canal, and the Shaping of America, (SUNY Press, 2009), historian Patrick McGreevy details the construction of the locks. The "Stairway" of McGreeevy's title is the Flight of Five Locks.[2]
To carry the canal across theNiagara Escarpment, the engineers built a five-stepstaircase lock.[2]
The restored locks reopened in 2014 (12 years ago) (2014).[3]
