The name is theplural form offlá which means "a flat ledge on a mountainside".[10] On 21 December 1917, aroyal resolution enacted the1917 Norwegian language reforms. Prior to this change, the name was spelledFlaa with thedigraph "aa", and after this reform, the name was spelledFlå, using the letterå instead.[11][12]
