Félix José Fermín Minaya (born October 9, 1963) is a Dominican former professionalbaseballshortstop who played inMajor League Baseball (MLB) for thePittsburgh Pirates (1987–1988),Cleveland Indians (1989–1993),Seattle Mariners (1994–1995), andChicago Cubs (1996). He currently serves as the manager for theTecolotes de los Dos Laredos of theMexican League.
On August 22, 1989, Fermin tied an 87-year-old MLB record with foursacrifice hits in one game against theSeattle Mariners.[1] Along withReggie Jefferson and cash, Fermín was traded by theCleveland Indians to the Seattle Mariners in exchange forOmar Vizquel before the 1994 season.[2] Fermín was a regular starter in 1995 when the Mariners won theAmerican League's Western Division. He led the AL in sacrifice hits (32) in 1989; he also led the AL in mostat bats perstrikeout (34.3) in 1993. In 1996, Fermin was very nearly traded to the Yankees forMariano Rivera.[3]
In a 10-season career, Fermín played in 903 games and had 2,767 at-bats, 294runs, 718hits, 86doubles, 11triples, 4home runs, 207runs batted in, 27stolen bases, 166walks, a .259batting average, a .305on-base percentage, a .303slugging average, 838total bases.
Fermín is the current manager forÁguilas Cibaeñas of theDominican Winter League. Since2000, he led the team to five championships until he was removed from the job in 2009. He was then hired to be the manager for theGigantes del Cibao until the Aguilas Cibaeñas hired him back in 2011.
As a player, his nickname was "El Gato", forFelix the Cat and his quick reflexes and defense.
On June 19, 2023, Fermín was named the manager of theDominican Republic national baseball team at the2023 Central American and Caribbean Games, held inEl Salvador.[4] The Dominican Republic finished fourth, good enough to qualify for the2023 Pan American Games inChile.
