European route E 90 is an A-Class West–EastEuropean route, extending fromLisbon inPortugal in the west to theTurkish–Iraqi border in the east. It is connected to the M5 of theArab Mashreq International Road Network.
The E 90 routes through five European countries, and includes four sea-crossings:Barcelona, Spain -Mazara del Vallo, Italy;Messina, Italy toReggio Calabria, Italy;Brindisi, Italy, toIgoumenitsa, Greece, andEceabat, Turkey, toÇanakkale, Turkey.

The E90 in Greece currently runs fromIgoumenitsa in the west toKipoi in the east, viaIoannina,Kozani,Thessaloniki andAlexandroupolis: the eastern end of the E90 in Greece leads to Turkey.[1]
In relation to the national road network, the E90 currently follows theA2 motorway (Egnatia Odos) for the entire duration.[2] The Egnatia Odos was named afterVia Egnatia, a Roman-era trail from the Adriatic to the Aegean that was built by MacedonianproconsulGnaeus Egnatius: the Roman road was later extended toByzantium (Constantinople) to the east andRome to the west.[3]
The E90 runs concurrently with theE75 betweenKleidi [el] andKalochori (via Chalastra), theE79 betweenLagkadas andEfkarpia, and theE92 between Igoumenitsa andPanagia [el]. The E90 also connects with theE55 at Igoumenitsa, theE65 at Kozani, theE85 north ofArdani [el], theE853 at Ioannina, and theE951 atPedini (southwest of Ioannina).[1]
