Erzgebirgskreis [ a] is a district (Kreis ) in the Free State ofSaxony ,Germany . It is named after theOre Mountains (German:Erzgebirge ), a mountain range in the southern part of the district which forms part of theGermany–Czech Republic border . It borders (from the west and clockwise) the districts ofVogtlandkreis andZwickau , theurban district Chemnitz , the districtMittelsachsen and theCzech Republic .
The district was established by merging the former districts ofAnnaberg ,Aue-Schwarzenberg ,Stollberg andMittlerer Erzgebirgskreis as part of the district reform of August 2008.
The district contains the western part of theOre Mountains , which also forms the border with theCzech Republic . Several rivers that rise in the Erzgebirge flow through the district, includingZwickauer Mulde andZschopau .
