Erode Turmeric orErodu Manjal is a type ofturmeric, aspice category which is grown in theErode region ofTamil Nadu,India. It has been recognized as aGeographical indication by theGovernment of India in 2019.[1] Erode turmeric is known for its highcurcumin (>90%).[2]
Among the two major varieties of turmeric, the Chinna Nadan variety is grown widely. Erode Turmeric occupies more than 70% of the turmeric grown inErode andCoimbatore districts.[3] As of 2021, the variety is grown in 50,000 acres acrossTamil Nadu. The turmeric is exported to countries likeBangladesh,Malaysia,Singapore,UK,USA and theMiddle East.[4]
There are four (three inErode, one inGobichettipalayam) regulated markets for selling erode turmeric inErode district.[5]
The Erode Turmeric Merchants Association applied forGeographical Indication recognition of Erode Turmeric throughGovernment of Tamil Nadu. TheGovernment of India recognized it as a Geographical indication officially in 2019.[6]
