Gamma-enolase, also known asenolase 2 (ENO2) orneuron specific enolase (NSE), is anenzyme that in humans is encoded by theENO2gene.[5][6] Gamma-enolase is aphosphopyruvate hydratase.

Gamma-enolase is one of the threeenolaseisoenzymes found inmammals. This isoenzyme, ahomodimer, is found in matureneurons and cells of neuronal origin. A switch fromalpha enolase to gamma enolase occurs inneural tissue during development inrats andprimates.[5]

Utility

[edit]
Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) immunostaining of acerebellarhemangioblastoma.

Detection of NSE withantibodies can be used to identifyneuronal cells and cells withneuroendocrine differentiation. NSE is produced bysmall-cell carcinomas, which areneuroendocrine in origin. NSE is therefore a useful tumor marker for distinguishing small-cell carcinomas from other tumors.[7]
