Edmund Stoppard (born 16 September 1974) is an English actor. He is the son of playwrightTom Stoppard andMiriam Stoppard.
Stoppard was born on 16 September 1974 in London, England, the son of playwrightTom Stoppard andMiriam Stoppard (née Stern), an author and physician. Both of his parents wereJewish, but he was raised in asecular household.[1] He attendedCaldicott School, andStowe School, a boarding school inStowe, Buckinghamshire.[2] His parents divorced when he was 18, with his father entering into a long-term relationship with actressFelicity Kendal.[3] He read French at theUniversity of Edinburgh, graduating in 1997,[3][4] and later trained atLAMDA.[5][6]
His first cousin is the former politicianOona King, Baroness King of Bow and his first cousin, once removed, was politicianTed Graham, Baron Graham of Edmonton.[citation needed]
Stoppard's film credits include appearing as one of the main characters inThe Pianist, Henryk Szpilman.[7] He also starred as the main character, Thomas, inJoy Division,[7] and as Lieutenant Addis inNanny McPhee and the Big Bang.[7]
In 2007 he played the title role in theBBC's drama-documentaryTchaikovsky: Fortune and Tragedy.[8] In 2008 Stoppard returned to the stage in theHampstead Theatre production ofAmy Rosenthal'sD. H. Lawrence biodramaOn the Rocks, alongsideNick Caldecott and Charlotte Emmerson.[9][10]
In 2010 he was cast in the role of Sir Hallam Holland in the 2010BBC sequel toUpstairs, Downstairs.[7] He also appeared inAny Human Heart, theChannel Four mini-series adaptation ofWilliam Boyd's critically acclaimednovel of the same name, alongsideMatthew Macfadyen.[7]
Stoppard was cast as Adrien Deume, a Swiss diplomat, Ariane's husband, in a screen version ofAlbert Cohen's novelBelle du Seigneur.[citation needed] He appeared in two television docudramas: playingHans Litten inThe Man Who Crossed Hitler, andAlan Turing inBritain's Greatest Codebreaker.[11][12] Later that year Stoppard starred in British independent feature filmPapadopoulos & Sons in which he played banking mogul Rob.[13] The film was released in the UK throughCineworld on 5 April 2013. In 2013 he appeared alongsideDavid Tennant andEmily Watson in theBBC miniseries,The Politician's Husband.[14] From 2017 he playedKing Philip IV of France in the historical fiction series,Knightfall.[15]
He plays the role of Director of Stability inBrave New World,[7] a 2020 Americansci-fidystopiandrama series on the streaming servicePeacock. It is an adaptation of thenovel of the same name byAldous Huxley.[7]
Stoppard's stage credits include the title role inEnglish Touring Theatre's 2005Hamlet,[7] alongsideAnita Dobson (which also ran at theNew Ambassadors Theatre) inShakespeare'sThe Merchant of Venice,[7] and Konstantin inChekhov'sThe Seagull at theChichester Festival Theatre in 2003.[7] HisWest End credits include Tom Wingfield in a 2007 revival ofThe Glass Menagerie at theApollo Theatre,[7] and the British premiere ofWit.[7] He appeared in a revival ofArcadia,[7] written by his father, at theDuke of York's Theatre in the West End in June 2009 alongsideSamantha Bond andNeil Pearson. He played Valentine Coverly.[5] In early 2012, he played the role of Peter in theTrafalgar Studios' production of the Francois Archambault playThe Leisure Society.[7]
In 2020 Stoppard appeared inLeopoldstadt,[7] a play by his father, Tom Stoppard at theWyndham's Theatre, London. The play is set among the Jewish community ofVienna in the first half of the 20th century and follows the lives of "a prosperous Jewish family who had fled the pogroms in the East".[1][16]
He and his wife Amie (née Stamp), a niece ofTerence Stamp, met while working behind the scenes on the filmRogue Trader.[2] They have three daughters.[17][better source needed]
