Dick Matena (born 24 April 1943)[1][2] is a Dutchcomics writer andcartoonist. He has also published under the pseudonymsA. den Dooier,John Kelly andDick Richards.

Matena has made several kinds of comics, from humor comics toerotic comics, but is known for his comic-book adaptations of famous literary novels.[3]

Career

Toonder studios

In 1960, at the age of 17, Matena started working as a volunteer at theToonder studios. He helped with the drawing projects ofTom Puss (1962–1963) andPanda (1961–1968).

In 1968, his first own comic appeared in the comic magazinePep.[3]

Freelance period

In 1964, Matena started working as a freelancer, in the beginning mainly for the Toonder studios. He drew his own comicPolletje Pluim.

ForPep, he drewDe Argonautjes (1968–1973) andRidder Roodhart (1969–1971). He wrote scenarios for theMacaroni's (1971–1975) andBlook (1972–1973).[3]

He later worked for the cartoon magazineEppo, and wrote four scenarios for the comic seriesStorm (1978–1980). Under the pseudonym Dick Richards he wrote eight scenarios for the comicDe Partners (1976–1984), drawn byCarry Brugman.[3]

In 1977, Matena changed his drawing style and created his first realistic comic,Virl.

Foreign period

From 1982 until 1984, he lived inSpain and worked for the art agencySelecciones Ilustradas.

For the comic magazineTitanic, he created two starship stories.[3]

After his move toBelgium, he created the comicsDe laatste dagen van Edgar Allan Poe,Gauguin en Van Gogh andMozart & Casanova.[3]

Spin-off ofStorm and after

With stories byMartin Lodewijk, Matena drew three spin-off comics ofStorm. The series of theseStorm albums are calledKronieken van de Tussentijd. He used his pseudonym John Kelly at first; the last comic is published under his own name.[3]

In 1997, he started again with the comicTom Puss. Two stories were published in the Dutch version of the magazineDonald Duck.

Comics of Dutch literature

Matena draws comics of classical Dutch literary books. In 2003, he won theBronzen Adhemar award. He was the first non-Flemish comics artist to receive this honor.[3]
