Deirdre Theresa Costigan[1] is an Irish politician andtrade unionist in the UK, who has been theLabour PartyMember of Parliament (MP) forEaling Southall in theUnited Kingdom House of Commons since2024.[2]
Costigan was born inDublin,Ireland, and emigrated to London in the 1990s.[3] She was ashop steward for thetrade unionUnison. Before her election as an MP, she was Unison's national officer for disability equality.[4]
In 2018, Costigan was elected as a Labour councillor for the Northolt Mandeville ward ofEaling London Borough Council. She was re-elected in 2022.[5] She served as deputy leader of the council for the three years preceding her election in 2024 as an MP.[6]
In the2024 general election, Costigan was elected theMember of parliament (MP) forEaling Southall with 23,000 votes (49.1%) and a majority of 15,793 over the second place Conservative candidate.[7] On 18 July 2024, she made hermaiden speech during a debate on foreign affairs and defence.[4]
In theSeptember 2025 cabinet reshuffle, Costigan was appointed to the ministerial position ofassistant government whip.[8]
