Colinus is a genus ofbirds in theNew World quail family, Odontophoridae. Members of the genus are commonly known asbobwhites.[1]

Taxonomy

The genusColinus was introduced in 1820 by the German naturalistGeorg August Goldfuss to accommodate a single species,Perdrix mexicanus, ajunior synonym ofTetrao virginiatusLinnaeus, 1758, thenorthern bobwhite, which is thetype species bymonotypy.[2][3] The genus name come from theNahuatl languageZōlin meaning "quail".[4]
