Cillian de Gascun is an Irish consultant virologist who has served as Director of theNational Virus Reference Laboratory inUCD since 2013. He previously served as the Chair of theNPHET Coronavirus Expert Advisory Group from 5 February 2020 to February 2022.[1][2]
De Gascun graduated with aBA MB BCh BAO fromTrinity College, Dublin in 1998.[3] While completingsenior registrar training inclinical microbiology andvirology at theNational Virus Reference Laboratory, he completed anMD atUniversity College Dublin and was made a fellow of theRoyal College of Pathologists.[4][5] De Gascun spent two years as a consultant virologist withSurrey Pathology Services in theUnited Kingdom[6] before he was appointed Laboratory Director of theNational Virus Reference Laboratory inUCD in 2013.[5][7]
From 5 February 2020 to February 2022, de Gascun chaired theCoronavirus Expert Advisory Group, a subgroup of theNational Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET), that monitored national research and developments in relation to theCOVID-19 pandemic, and provided expert advice to NPHET and theHealth Service Executive (HSE) in relation thepandemic in Ireland.[8] In April 2022, he was named to the COVID Advisory Group, which replaced NPHET.[9]
Following two years spent as a consultant virologist with Surrey Pathology Services in the UK, Cillian was appointed Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory and returned to Ireland permanently in 2013.
