Champasak orMuang Champassak (Lao:ຈຳປາສັກ[tɕàmpàːsák]) is a small town in southernLaos, on the west bank of theMekong River about 40 km south ofPakse, the capital ofChampasak Province. It is the seat of the Champasakdistrict (muang).[1]
The town was once the seat of theKingdom of Champasak, an independent Lao state that was abolished by theFrench in 1945 when they created the Kingdom of Laos,[1] but the last King of Champasak had his palace inPakse. Today the town is very small, consisting mostly of guesthouses along the riverbank, catering to tourists visiting theVat Phou temple ruins some 10 km away.[2][3]
