Thecarabinier (Haitian Creole:Karabinye, English:carabineer) is a traditional cultural dance fromHaiti that originated back to the time of theHaitian Revolution deriving from a section of thekontradans that is said to have evolved into theméringue ormereng (Haitian Creole) dance.[1][2][3]

Origins

Just after the Revolution of 1804, European figure dances (contredanse,lancers, and thequadrille), accompanied byKongo influences (chica,banboula and thekalenda), hybridized into a couples dance named after theCarabiniers rifle regiments in theHaitian army.[4]
