Cansu Özdemir (born 8 September 1988) is a German politician ofThe Left from Hamburg. She is a member of theBundestag.[1]
Özdemir was born inHamburg toKurdish parents in 1988.[2] After she received herAbitur from Kieler Straße Business School[3] in 2009, she studiedcultural anthropology[3] and politics at theUniversity of Hamburg.[4]
In 2009, Özdemir also became a member of The Left and in2011 she entered the Hamburg Parliament[5] of which she has been a member ever since.[4] Özdemir led The Left in the2020 Hamburg state election.[6]
She is known for her support for the legalization of theKurdistan Workers' Party,[7] which is banned inGermany. Özdemir is also a strong critic of theTurkish presidentRecep Tayyip Erdoğan, and the foreign policy of Germany regardingTurkey.[6] She calledRecep Tayyip Erdoğan a "dictator" in an interview,[8] and is also critical of theSyrian civil war.
In the2021 German federal election, she unsuccessfully contested theconstituency ofHamburg-Altona. In the2025 German federal election, she was placed second on her party's state list for Hamburg and was elected to theBundestag.
