A Banten Sundanese speaker, recorded inTaiwan.

Banten Sundanese orBantenese (Basa Sunda Banten orBasa Wewengkon Banten) is one of the Sundanese dialects[2] spoken predominantly by theBantenese — an indigenous ethnic group native toBanten — in the westernmost region of the island ofJava, and in the westernBogor Regency (especially in Greater Jasinga,[3] covering the districts ofJasinga,Cigudeg,Tenjo,Nanggung,Parung Panjang, andSukajaya; known as Jasinga Sundanese),[4] as well as the northwestern part ofSukabumi Regency. A variety of Bantenese is spoken by the Ciptagelar people in theKasepuhan Ciptagelar traditional community in Cisolok district and theKasepuhan Banten Kidul traditional community inLebak Regency.[5]

The regional government of Banten is currently making a significant approach to preserve this dialect through a news program entitledBeja ti Lembur, which was aired by the regional CTV Banten network in Bantenese.[6]

Geographic distribution

[edit]

Unlike most other language varieties inJava, Bantenese does not employsociolinguistic register,[7][8] unlike thePriangan Sundanese spoken in theParahyangan region which is known as the standard form of Sundanese used as a form of language of regional education.

Bantenese is classified either as a dialect of Sundanese, or a distinct language closely related to Sundanese.[9] This language is predominantly spoken in the southern region ofBanten, which areLebak,Pandeglang, dan part of the west, central, and southTangerang Regency,[10] and a little in the western part ofTangerang City andSouth Tangerang City.[11][12] In the northernSerang Regency, this language is used daily by the people of Ciomas, Jawilan, Pabuaran, Padarincang,Cinangka, Baros, Petir, Cikeusal, Kopo, Cikande, Pamarayan, Kragilan, and parts of Anyar district.[8] The Banten Sundanese somehow also used by Bantenese transmigrants inCentral Lampung Regency andSouth Lampung Regency,Lampung.[13]
