Augustus Alexandria Chapman (March 9, 1805 – June 7, 1876) was a 19th-century politician and lawyer fromVirginia. Chapman served several terms in theVirginia House of Delegates, as well as one term in theUnited States House of Representatives. He was also elected to theVirginia Constitutional Convention of 1850.
Born inUnion, Virginia (nowWest Virginia), Chapman studied law as a young adult, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws from theUniversity of Virginia in 1827.[1]
He was admitted to the bar in 1825 and commenced practice in Union, Virginia.[2]
About 1829, Chapman settled inMonroe County, Virginia.[3] He was a member of theVirginia House of Delegates from 1835 to 1841.[4]
Chapman was later elected aDemocrat to theUnited States House of Representatives, serving two terms from 1843 to 1847.[5]
Chapman was a member of theVirginia Constitutional Convention from 1850 to 1851 and later returned to the House of Delegates from 1857 to 1861.[6]
At the outbreak of theCivil War, Chapman became abrigadier general of theVirginia Militia and as such took the field with his command in 1861.[7] He was in charge of the 19th Brigade, which consisted of six regiments fromRaleigh,Mercer,Fayette,Monroe, andGiles counties.[8]
After the war, he resumed practicing law in his hometown and engaged in agricultural pursuits.[9]
Augustus Alexandria Chapman died on June 7, 1876, inHinton, West Virginia. He is interred at Green Hill Cemetery inUnion, West Virginia.[10]
