TheAsan orAssan were aYeniseian speaking, hunter-fisherer[1] people inSiberia, distinct from theKotts.[2][3] In the 18th and 19th centuries they were assimilated by theEvenki andRussians.[1] They spoke theAssan language, closely related to, and can be considered a dialect of,[4]Kott. The Assans, after their migration down the Yenisei river, settled around theUsolka [ru] andBiryusa rivers. By the time of the publication of theBrockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary, there were less than 100 scattered families left of them, and they had beenTurkicized.[5] The villageAsansk [ru], founded in 1897, bears their name.[6]
