It was split fromarea code 415 on August 2, 1997, and includes most ofSan Mateo County (except the northernmost portion), part ofSan Francisco, and the northwestern portion ofSanta Clara County includingPalo Alto,Mountain View, andLos Altos.
Prior to October 2021, area code 650 had telephone numbers assigned for thecentral office code 988. In 2020,988 was designated nationwide as a dialing code for theNational Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which created a conflict for exchanges that permitseven-digit dialing. This area code was therefore scheduled to transition toten-digit dialing by October 24, 2021.[1]
