Ardyne Point is aheadland on theCowal peninsula inArgyll and Bute, Scotland. It lies to the south of the town ofDunoon and to the west of the village ofToward. Offshore of the point, the waters of theKyles of Bute, to the west, andLoch Striven, to the north, meet theFirth of Clyde, to the south and east. The point faces across this meet towards theIsle of Bute.[1]
Anoil rig construction yard operated at Ardyne Point from 1974 to 1978. Run bySir Robert McAlpine, it constructed three concrete gravity platforms for use in theNorth Sea. The largest of these was theCormorant Alpha platform for theCormorant oilfield situated some 100 miles (160 km) north-east ofShetland, where it is still in use.[2]
Since the 1960s, the Loch Striven Oil Fuel Depot has operated atKnockdow, some 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Ardyne Point. Operated by theOil and Pipelines Agency, it receivesdiesel andaviation fuel by coastal tanker, and provides supplies toRoyal Navy and otherNATO vessels.[3][4]
