Alessandro Gentile (born November 12, 1992) is an Italian professionalbasketball player forUrania Milano of theSerie A2. Standing at 2.01 m (6 ft 7 in),[1] he plays at theshooting guard andsmall forward positions. He was selected by theMinnesota Timberwolves with the 53rd overall pick in the2014 NBA draft.
From 2007 to 2009, Gentile played with the junior teams ofTreviso Basket. In 2009, he signed to play with Treviso's senior men's team and in the 2009–10 season, he played in 24 games inItaly's top-tier levelLBA league, averaging 3.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. In 2011, he won theItalian League's Best Player Under 22 award. On June 14, 2011, he signed a three-year contract extension with Treviso Basket.[2]

In December 2011, Gentile left Treviso Basket and signed a four-year deal withOlimpia Milano.[3] In 2013–14, Gentile had a break-out season, averaging 11.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists over 21 games in theEuroLeague. In June 2014, after Milano won their 26thItalian League championship, Gentile was named theItalian League Finals MVP.[4]
In July 2014, Gentile penned a new three-year contract with Milano.[5] A year later in 2015, the Milanocaptain extended his contract until 2018, with a new three-year deal.[6] On October 6, 2015, Gentile played against theNBA'sBoston Celtics, in theNBA Global Games tournament.
Gentile was sent onloan to the Greek clubPanathinaikos in December 2016. However, Milano retained his rights through the 2017–18 season.[7] He was released by Panathinaikos in March 2017, and he finished the2016–17 season by playing on loan forHapoel Jerusalem in theIsraeli Super League, and preparing for the upcomingEuroBasket 2017 tournament.[8]
On December 5, 2016, Gentile reached an agreement with his Italian team, and he leftMilano to conclude his season onloan in a non-Italian team.[9] On December 19, 2016, Gentile then joined the Greek clubPanathinaikos, on a loan from Olimpia Milano, for the rest of the season.[10] He was with Panathinaikos, as they won the2017Greek Cup Final againstAris.
He was then released by Panathinaikos in March 2017.[11] With Panathinaikos, he averaged 3.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, 0.6 assists, and 0.3 steals per game with them in theEuroLeague,[12][13] and 5.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 0.6 steals per game in theGreek Basket League.[14]
On April 3, 2017, Gentile signed with the Israeli clubHapoel Jerusalem, of theIsraeli Super League for the remainder of theIsraeli Super League 2016–17 season.[15][16] However, he was released by the club before their season ended.[17] In 8 games with the club (6 regular season games and 2 playoff games), he averaged 4.3 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 0.8 assists per game.[18]
On July 18, 2017, Gentile signed with Italian clubVirtus Bologna, for the2017–18 season.[19]
On October 30, 2018, Gentile signed a one-year deal with Spanish clubMovistar Estudiantes.[20][21]
On September 26, 2019, he signed withAquila Basket Trento of the ItalianLega Basket Serie A (LBA).[22]
On September 29, 2020, he signed a three-month deal withMovistar Estudiantes, returning to theLiga ACB.[23]
On June 25, 2021, Gentile signed withPallacanestro Varese of the ItalianLega Basket Serie A (LBA).[24] He averaged 14.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. On January 27, 2022, Gentile parted ways with the team.[25]
On January 28, 2022, he signed withNew Basket Brindisi of theLega Basket Serie A.[26]
On June 26, 2014, Gentile was selected with the 53rd overall pick in the2014 NBA draft by theMinnesota Timberwolves.[27] His NBA draft rights were later traded to theHouston Rockets on draft night.[28]
On August 19, 2018,Gentile was reported to have intention to join theHouston Rockets,[29] but no news was announced since then.[30] Later Gentile was waived byHouston Rockets on October 12.[31]
Gentile started in the youth age categories of Italy's junior national teams, first for the Under-16's at the2008 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship, and then notably winning the silver medal with the Under-20s at the2011 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship.
Gentile then became a member of the senior men'sItalian national basketball team. He played with Italy atEuroBasket 2013 andEuroBasket 2015.[32] He also played at theTurin 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament.[33]

Gentile is the son of the Italian basketball iconNando Gentile. He is also the younger brother of Italian professional basketball playerStefano Gentile.[34] Alessandro moved around Italy and Europe, following his father during his playing career. Along with his older brother Stefano, he played with the youth teams ofPanathinaikos in Greece, while his father played with the club's senior team.[35] He has played with his brother in the seniorItalian national team andVirtus Bologna.
