Akmolinsk Oblast (Russian:Акмо́линская область) was anOblast (province) of theRussian Empire. It roughly corresponded to most of present-day northernKazakhstan and the southern part ofOmsk Oblast in Russia. It was formerly part ofKazakh khanate. It was created after the division of theOblast of Siberian Kirghiz into the Akmolinsk andSemipalatinsk Oblasts on 21 October 1868.[citation needed] Its center wasOmsk and consisted of uezds ofAkmolinsk,Atbasar,Kokchetav, Omsk andPetropavlovsk. It borderedTobolsk Governorate to the north,Semipalatinsk Oblast to the east,Syr-Darya Oblast to the south,Turgay Oblast to the southwest andOrenburg Governorate to the northwest.
As of 1897, 682,608 people populated the oblast.Kazakhs constituted the majority of the population. Significant minorities consisted ofRussians andUkrainians. Total Turkic speaking were 438,889 (64.2%).

After the defeat of the White Army in theRussian Civil War, it was renamed asOmsk Governorate on 3 January 1920.[1]
