September 24 – EmperorMichael III is murdered, by order of his co-emperorBasil I. Basil becomes sole ruler (basileus) of theByzantine Empire, and founds theMacedonian Dynasty (until1056). Basil rebuilds theByzantine army and navy, in an effort to restore the empire.^[1]

Europe

August –Treaty of Compiègne: KingCharles the Bald cedes theCotentin Peninsula toSalomon, duke ('king') ofBrittany, after he had sent his son-in-lawPascweten to negotiate a peace. Charles orders the fortification of the cities ofTours,Le Mans andCompiègne.
Bořivoj I declares himself duke (knyaz) ofBohemia, and founds thePřemyslid Dynasty (approximate date).

Britain

Vikings or "Danes" (the two terms were often used interchangeably at the time), comprising theGreat Heathen Army, advance northward from bases in theKingdom of East Anglia, into the Anglo-SaxonKingdom of Northumbria.
- Deira, the southernmost part of Northumbria, is conquered by the Vikings.Ivar the Boneless, one of their leaders, installs apuppet king of Northumbria,Ecgberht I.^[2]
- The rival monarchs of Northumbria,Ælla andOsberht, join forces in an attempt to expel the Great Heathen Army, but aredefeated in battle by Ivar the Boneless andHalfdan Ragnarsson. Osberht is killed in battle, while Ælla is reportedly captured, before being subject to theblood eagle: a combined method of torture and execution.
- Surviving members of the Northumbriancourt flee into the northernmost part of the kingdom,Bernicia.
