The2024 Pennsylvania Attorney General election was held on November 5, 2024, to elect theattorney general of theU.S. state ofPennsylvania . Republican York County district attorneyDave Sunday defeated former auditor generalEugene DePasquale in the general election, becoming the first Republican to be elected state attorney general since2008 .[ 1] This was the only attorney general seat to change parties in 2024.
Attorney GeneralJosh Shapiro , who was re-electedin 2020 , would have been ineligible to seek a third term in 2024 due to term limits. He instead ran successfully forgovernor of Pennsylvania in2022 .[ 2] [ 3]
In accordance with Article IV, Section 8, of thePennsylvania Constitution , upon taking office as governor, Shapiro was permitted to nominate his successor as attorney general to serve the remaining two years of the term after being confirmed by thePennsylvania Senate .[ 4] [ 5] [ 6] By tradition, an appointed attorney general agrees not to run for the post in the next election.[ 7] In the interim between Shapiro's resignation to become governor and the appointee's installation, first deputy attorney generalMichelle Henry , aDemocrat , served as acting attorney general.[ 7] Henry was appointed for the remainder of Shapiro's term, and in accordance with tradition did not run in the 2024 race.
