The2016 North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction election was held on November 8, 2016, to elect theNorth Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction, concurrently with the2016 presidential election, as well as elections to theUnited States Senate,U.S. House of Representatives,governor, theCouncil of State, and otherstate,local, andjudicial elections.

Incumbent Democratic state superintendentJune Atkinson ran for re-election to a fourth term in office, but was defeated by Republican attorneyMark Johnson in what was considered anupset.[1][2]
