Atlético Madrid competed for their tenthLa Liga title and participated in theUEFA Europa League as holders, entering in the Group stage due to their seventh-place finish in the2010–11 La Liga. They also entered theCopa del Rey in the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by eventual winnersReal Madrid.

This season was the first since2003–04 withoutPablo Ibáñez who departed for English clubWest Bromwich Albion.
