The2008–09 season wasPort Vale's 97th season of football in theEnglish Football League, and first season inLeague Two, following theirrelegation fromLeague One. The season began under managerLee Sinnott, who was dismissed in September after a series of poor results.Dean Glover was appointed as his successor but was unable to prevent the club from finishing in 18th place with 48 points, narrowly avoiding further relegation.
In cup competitions, Vale experienced early exits. They were eliminated in the Second Round of theFA Cup byMacclesfield Town, and both theLeague Cup and theFootball League Trophy saw them knocked out in the First Round bySheffield United andStockport County, respectively.Marc Richards was the club's top scorer, netting 11 goals in all competitions, with 10 in the league. GoalkeeperJoe Anyon was namedPlayer of the Year, despite suffering a broken leg towards the end of the season. The club's highest home attendance was 7,273 againstBradford City on 6 September 2008, and the lowest was 4,090 againstDagenham & Redbridge on 10 March 2009.

The pre-season sawmanagerLee Sinnott signnon-League midfielderRob Taylor,[1] formerHereford United defenderJohn McCombe,[2] and formerMiddlesbrough midfielderSteve Thompson.[3] Both players cited Sinnott as their reason for joining the club.[4][5] He also added experienced defenderSam Stockley (Wycombe Wanderers);[6] midfielderAnthony Griffith (Doncaster Rovers);[7] and attacking midfielderLouis Dodds (Leicester City) to the squad.[8]Lee Collins also joined on an extendedloan fromWolverhampton Wanderers,[9] and would sign a permanentcontract with the club in January.[10] Stockley was appointedcaptain,[11] and most of these players would become key for the club over the next few seasons. Just before the season's start, teenageTom Taiwo also arrived on a month loan fromChelsea,[12] as didPlymouth Argyle youngsterDamien McCrory.[13] The club was aiming for an immediate return toLeague One,[14] and fans got behind the club with record high season ticket sales of over 6,000.[15][16]
Vale opened the season with a 3–1 win overLuton Town atKenilworth Road, withLouis Dodds andSam Parkin goals cancelling each other out in the first half, whilst second-half strikes from Rob Taylor andMarc Richards won the game.[17] August went well, but all four league games in September ended in defeat. However, Sinnott refused to compromise his managerial philosophy to pick up results.[18] Vale lost 2–0 toBradford City on 6 September, with goals fromLee Bullock andPeter Thorne.[19] A 4–1 home defeat toMacclesfield Town on 20 September would prove to be Sinnott's last game in charge. Sinnott was sacked on 22 September, with the Valiants in 16th place,Dean Glover taking over ascaretaker manager for the second time in twelve months.[20] The players were against the decision to axe Sinnott.[21] Sinnott would later take court action against the club for a breach of contract,[22][23] and settle out of court.[24] Glover was appointed as manager permanently on 6 October.[25] A win atShrewsbury Town instigated a run of four away wins out of five. However, Vale soon returned to their poor form and slid back down the table. At the end of October, former Vale starDave Brammer joined on loan fromMillwall,[26] and would join permanently in the Januarytransfer window.[27] The next monthScott Brown also arrived on loan fromCheltenham Town,[28] and would also join on a permanent transfer two months later.[29] This is also what happened with defenderGareth Owen,[30] who arrived after leavingStockport County following a bust-up withJim Gannon.[31]Notts County playerNeil MacKenzie also joined on loan,[32] but would not enjoy his short stay inStoke-on-Trent.[33] Attempts to bring backChris Birchall on loan failed.[34] LeavingBurslem wasChris Slater, who returned to former clubChasetown.[35] In December,Andy Porter left the club's backroom staff after 17 years at the club,[36] highlighting the unrest in the camp. Both Porter andMark Grew had turned down offers to become Glover's assistant.[37]
In January, strikerLuke Rodgers was released from his contract after a bust-up with manager Dean Glover,[38] and immediately signed withYeovil Town.[39]Shane Tudor retired due to injury on 21 January.[40] As well as the permanent signings of a number of loan players, Glover also brought inPakistan internationalAdnan Ahmed on loan fromTranmere Rovers.[41] Glover stated the club's revised aim was a top-half finish.[42] In February, Glover signedCarlisle United strikerKevin Gall on loan.[43] He failed to score in seven games with the club, and returned to Carlisle after picking up acalf injury.[44] In March,Kyle Perry was allowed to join local non-League sideNorthwich Victoria,[45] after being told he had no future at Vale.[46] In his place came loanee wingerPaul Marshall fromManchester City.[47] On 21 March, Vale recorded a surprise 1–0 win overBradford City atValley Parade with Howland the only scorer.[48] On 28 March, Anyonbroke his leg atSaltergate in a defeat toChesterfield.[49] With Vale going eight games without a win, Glover admitted he was 'a dead man walking',[50] and implored the fan's not to boohis son.[51] Fans protested against both the board and the manager.[52] The final game was a 2–1 win overBarnet at theUnderhill Stadium.
They finished in 18th place with 48 points, 21 points short of theplay-offs, and eleven points clear ofrelegation. OnlyAccrington Stanley andChester City scored fewer than Vale's tally of 44 goals. With 14 defeats, onlyMacclesfield Town and Chester lost more games than Vale. HadBournemouth andLuton Town not faced point deductions, then Vale would have finished in twentieth place.Marc Richards was the club's top scorer with eleven goals in all competitions, whilstLouis Dodds also contributed ten goals.
At the end of the season, most of the playing staff were retained. However, Scott Brown returned to Cheltenham Town, and Kyle Perry was released and signed withMansfield Town,[53] and Dave Brammer had to retire after ChairmanBill Bratt informed him via voicemail that he would not be offered a new contract.[54]Youth team graduate Paul Dixon was not offered a new contract. Dean Glover, unpopular with the fans, was also informed that he would not be retained as manager for the following season,[55] and left the club permanently after he rejected the opportunity to remain as a youthcoach.[56] A slow uptake of season ticket sales was one major factor in Glover's sacking.[57] Following Glover's departure the club withdrew their contract offer toPaul Edwards,[58] who went on to play forBarrow. However, Player of the YearJoe Anyon stayed at the club, despite claiming other clubs were interested in his signature.[59]
On the financial side, poor results encouraged Vale fans to organize protests against manager Glover and the board, including ChairmanBill Bratt.[60] With talks of fresh investment from shirt sponsors Harlequin Property came rumours on theinternet that the company were planning to demolishVale Park and build asupermarket, paying off Bratt to ensure his compliance.[61] Bratt passionately denied these accusations, seemingly angered by the suggestion and claimed that if he were to comply with the protesters demands and remove himself and the rest of the V-2001 directors from the Board, then the club would fold asbanks andcreditors would seek their money. He also reiterated his prior statements by stating that he would be prepared to leave his position if the right offer were to be made.[62] The club had to make monthly repayments of around£19,000 for a £2.25 million loan taken out from the local council in 2005.[63] The club's shirt sponsorship came from Harlequin Property.
In theFA Cup, Vale advanced pastHuddersfield Town with a 4–3 win at theGalpharm Stadium, Dodds hitting a brace.[64] They then were knocked out byMacclesfield Town at the second-round stage with a 3–1 home defeat.[65] This meant the Vale missed out on a lucrative home tie withPremier League sideEverton. Keeper Anyon slammed his defenders for their part in the defeat.[66]
In theLeague Cup, Vale were defeated 3–1 byChampionship clubSheffield United atBramall Lane.[67]
In theFootball League Trophy, Vale exited in the first round with a 1–0 defeat toStockport County atEdgeley Park.[68]
