The1996 Iowa State Senate elections took place as part of thebiennial 1996United States elections.Iowa voters elected state senators in half of the state senate's districts—the 25 even-numbered state senate districts. State senators serve four-year terms in theIowa State Senate, with half of the seats up for election each cycle. Following the previous election,Democrats had control of the Iowa state Senate with 27 seats toRepublicans' 23 seats.
To take control of the chamber fromDemocrats, theRepublicans needed to net three Senate seats.
Republicans claimed control of theIowa State Senate following the 1996 general election by netting 6sixseats, resulting inRepublicans holding 29 seats andDemocrats having 21 seats.
