The1996–97 Milwaukee Bucks season was the 29th season for theMilwaukee Bucks in theNational Basketball Association.[1] The Bucks received the fourth overall pick in the1996 NBA draft, and selected point guardStephon Marbury out ofGeorgia Tech University, but soon traded him to theMinnesota Timberwolves in exchange for rookie shooting guard, and top draft pickRay Allen from theUniversity of Connecticut.[2][3][4] During the off-season, the team signed free agentArmen Gilliam,[5][6][7] acquiredAndrew Lang from the Timberwolves,[8] acquiredElliot Perry from thePhoenix Suns,[9][10] and hiredChris Ford as their new head coach.[11][12]

Under Ford, and with the new trio of Allen,Vin Baker andGlenn Robinson, the Bucks got off to a 15–11 start to the regular season, but soon struggled and fell under .500 inwinning percentage, holding a 21–26 record at the All-Star break.[13] At mid-season, the team traded second-year guardShawn Respert to theToronto Raptors in exchange forAcie Earl.[14][15][16] The Bucks posted an 8-game losing streak between February and March, and finished in seventh place in theCentral Division with a 33–49 record, missing theNBA playoffs for the sixth consecutive year.[17]

Baker averaged 21.0 points, 10.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game, and was named to theAll-NBA Third Team, while Robinson averaged 21.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game, and Allen provided the team with 13.4 points per game, led them with 117 three-point field goals, and was named to theNBA All-Rookie Second Team. In addition,Sherman Douglas provided with 9.7 points and 5.4 assists per game, while off the bench,Johnny Newman contributed 8.7 points per game, Gilliam averaged 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, Perry contributed 6.9 points, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game, and Lang, the team's starting center, averaged 5.3 points and rebounds per game each,[18] but only played 52 games due to an Achilles injury.[19][20]

During theNBA All-Star weekend at theGund Arena inCleveland, Ohio, Baker was selected for the1997 NBA All-Star Game, as a member of the Eastern Conference All-Star team,[21][22][23] while Allen was selected for theNBA Rookie Game, as a member of the Eastern Conference Rookie team,[21][24] and also participated in theNBA Slam Dunk Contest.[21][25] The Bucks finished 22nd in the NBA in home-game attendance, with an attendance of 634,999 at theBradley Center during the regular season.[18][26]

Following the season, Baker was traded to theSeattle SuperSonics in an off-season three-team trade, and after four seasons with the Bucks,[27][28][29] while Newman was dealt to theDenver Nuggets,[30][31][32] Douglas, who was involved in a trade with theCleveland Cavaliers, signed as a free agent with theNew Jersey Nets,[33][34][35] and Earl was released to free agency.
