The1984 United States presidential election in Georgia took place on November 6, 1984. All 50 states andthe District of Columbia, were part of the1984 United States presidential election. Georgia voters chose 12 electors to theElectoral College, which selected thepresident andvice president of the United States.

Georgia was won by incumbent PresidentRonald Reagan, running with Vice PresidentGeorge H. W. Bush, defeated former Vice PresidentWalter Mondale ofMinnesota, running with U.S. RepresentativeGeraldine Ferraro. Georgia weighed in for this election as 2% moreRepublican than the national average. The 1984 presidential election in the state of Georgia marked the first time a winning candidate won over a million votes in Georgia.

As of the2024 presidential election[update], this is the last election in whichRandolph County,Clarke County (home toAthens and theUniversity of Georgia), andDeKalb County voted for a Republican presidential candidate.[1]

Georgia was one of five states, alongsideWest Virginia,Hawaii,Maryland andRhode Island, that Reagan lost in1980 but won in 1984.

Campaign

Jesse Jackson's voters were 92% black, 6% white, 1% Hispanic, and 1% were members of other groups.[2] 48% of Jackson voters listed Mondale as their second candidate in exit polls conducted byCBS News andThe New York Times'.[3]

Among white voters, 73% supported Reagan while 27% supported Mondale.[4][5]
