  • The Conference was a hybrid of Division I and II programs. Mississippi Valley State and Prairie View A&M were classified as Division II.[1][2] All the others were classified as Division I.

The1977 Jackson State Tigers football team represented theJackson State University during the1977 NCAA Division I football season as a member of theSouthwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Led by second-year head coachW. C. Gorden, the Tigers compiled an overall record of 8–3 and a mark of 5–1 in conference play, placing second in the SWAC. It was their first season as a member of Division I.
