Apresidential election was held inIndiana on November 7, 1972. TheRepublican ticket of the incumbentpresident of the United States Richard Nixon and thevice president of the United States Spiro Agnew defeated theDemocratic ticket of the juniorU.S. senator fromSouth Dakota George McGovern and the formerU.S. ambassador to France Sargent Shriver. Nixon defeated McGovern in the national election with 520electoral votes.^[2]

Nixon became the only presidential candidate from either party to carry every county in the state. His 32-point margin of victory remains the best performance by a Republican presidential candidate in Indiana.^[4] As of the2024 presidential election^[update], this is the most recent election in which the Republican ticket carriedLake County.^[5]
