The1964 United States presidential election in Connecticut took place on November 3, 1964, as part of the1964 United States presidential election, which was held throughout all 50 states andD.C. Voters chose eight representatives, or electors to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.
Connecticut voted overwhelmingly for theDemocratic nominee, incumbentPresidentLyndon B. Johnson ofTexas, over theRepublican nominee,SenatorBarry Goldwater ofArizona. Johnson ran with SenatorHubert H. Humphrey ofMinnesota, while Goldwater's running mate wasCongressmanWilliam E. Miller ofNew York.
Johnson carried Connecticut by a wide margin of 35.72%. His 67.81% vote share is the largest for a Democrat in Connecticut presidential election history, and the largest for any party sinceJohn Quincy Adams in1828. He was the first Democrat to win every county since 1852.[2]
To date, this is the last time that the city ofShelton and the towns ofBethlehem,Goshen,Harwinton,Middlebury,New Fairfield,Oxford, andSomers voted Democratic.
In addition, this election marks the last time that any presidential candidate won more than 70% in any Connecticut county.
