The1956 United States presidential election in Pennsylvania took place on November 6, 1956, as part of the1956 United States presidential election. Voters chose 32 representatives, or electors to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.

Pennsylvania strongly voted for theRepublican nominee,PresidentDwight D. Eisenhower, over theDemocratic nominee, formerIllinois GovernorAdlai Stevenson. Pennsylvania was the home state of President Eisenhower, as he moved to theGettysburg area afterWorld War II. Eisenhower won Pennsylvania by a solid 13.19% margin, and carried every county exceptPhiladelphia and four heavily unionized coal counties in the southwestern "Black Country". This result nonetheless made Pennsylvania 2.21% more Democratic than the nation-at-large.

This was the last time Pennsylvania voted for a Republican presidential candidate until Eisenhower's vice president,Richard Nixon, won the state in his re-election bid in1972.

  1. ^Although he was born in Texas and grew up in Kansas before his military career, at the time of the 1952 election Eisenhower was president ofColumbia University and was, officially, a resident of New York. During his first term as president, he moved his private residence toGettysburg, Pennsylvania, and officially changed his residency to Pennsylvania.
