IncumbentDemocratic Governor Allan Shivers was overwhelmingly reelected in the general election after defeating future SenatorRalph Yarborough in the Democraticprimary . TheRepublican Party endorsed the Democratic state ticket, including Shivers, in order to attract more votes for their presidential nominee, GeneralDwight D. Eisenhower .
