Ireland'sJoshua Pim wins three of the four major tournaments taking theIrish Championships,Northern Championships andWimbledon Championships, and is title leader this season winning six out seven events.

The1893 Men's Tennis Season was a worldwidetennis circuit composed of 138 major, national, regional, provincial, state, county, metropolitan, city and regular tournaments.

The season began on 2 January inCape Town,South Africa and ended on 29 December inAuckland,New Zealand.

Season summary

The 1893 men's tennis season began on 2 January in Cape Town, South Africa with theWestern Province Championships that was won by Edward Fuller.[1]

At the end of April theBritish Covered Court Championships are played on indoor wood courts atBayswater, London the event is won by IrelandsHarold Mahony who defeated EnglandsErnest Meers in straight sets.[2]

Moving across theIrish Sea to theDublin, Ireland to theFitzwilliam Club, the seasons first major tournament kicks off on 22 May the mens singles final on 25 May is won by IrelandsJoshua Pim who beats EnglandsErnest Renshaw in four sets.[3]

At the beginning of June theWelsh Championships held inCardiff, Wales is won by IrelandsGeorge Ball-Greene who defeats Englands Arnold Blake in four sets in the mens singles final.[4]

In mid-June the second major tournament of the season theNorthern Championships is played at theNorthern Lawn Tennis Club,Manchester, England. The mens singles final is an all Irish affair withJoshua Pim securing a second major title by beatingHarold Mahony in four sets.[5]

At the end of June theFrench Championships are held inParis, France on clay courts the mens singles title is won byLaurent Riboulet who defeats compatriotJean Schopfer in straight sets.[6]

At the beginning of July thePacific Coast Championships are staged inSan Rafael, California and are played on cement courts, the mens singles title goes to Thomas Driscoll who beats Arthur Allen in the All Comers final, but holder William Taylor conceades a walkover to Driscoll.[7]

In mid-July the third major tournament of the season theWimbledon Championships played at the All England Club is won by IrelandsJoshua Pim who collects a third consecutive major title by defeating EnglandsWilfred Baddeley in four sets. This is Pim's fifth title of the season.[8]

At the end of July theCanadian International Championships held inToronto, Canada American Harry Avery defeats Canadian Henry Mackenzie in the All Comers, holderFred Hovey is a no show in the challenge round Avery takes the title by a walkover.[9]

Towards the very end of August theChampionship of Germany is played inHamburg, Germany Christian Winzer takes the singles title defeating Walter Bonne in four sets.[10]

On 30 August at the final major tournament of the season inNewport, Rhode Island theU.S. National Championships is won byBob Wrenn, this was Wrenn's fifth and final title of the year.[11]

In October theSydney Metropolitan Grass Court Championships are played inSydney, Australia the singles event is won by Dudley Webb.[12] On 29 December the 1893 season concludes at theNew Zealand Championships played in Auckland, New Zealand withMinden Fenwick winning the singles event.[13]
