Apresidential election was held inNew Jersey on November 5, 1844 as part of the1844 United States presidential election.[1] Voters chose seven representatives, or electors to theElectoral College, who voted forPresident andVice President.
New Jersey voted for theWhig candidate,Henry Clay, overDemocratic candidateJames K. Polk. Clay won New Jersey by a margin of 1.09 percent; however, Polk would be the last Democrat to carryCape May County untilWoodrow Wilson in1912.[2] This is the last time a Democrat won without carryingHudson County.
