Agubernatorial election was held inVirginia on December 8, 1821.^[4] The incumbentgovernor of Virginia Thomas Mann Randolph Jr. defeated theU.S. representative fromVirginia's 13th congressional district Burwell Bassett.^[1]

The election was conducted by theVirginia General Assembly in joint session.^[5] Randolph was elected with a majority on the first ballot.^[1]
