SeeJDK 7 and JRE 7 InstallationGuide for general information about installing JDK 7 and JRE 7.
When you install the Java platform, the Java plugin file isincluded as part of that install. If you want to use Java withinFirefox, you need to manually create a symbolic link from theplugin file in the release to one of the locations that Firefoxexpects. To make the plugin available to all users, create the linkinside of the Firefox application's directory, in theplugins subdirectory. Alternatively, you can createthe symbolic link in your home directory, in~/.mozilla/plugins. In the remainder of this document, the text, "Firefoxplugins directory",implies either of these locations.
Note: For Firefox version 21 and higher, you must create the symbolic link in the~/.mozilla/plugins directory. Beginning with Firefox version 21, creating the symbolic link in theplugins subdirectory of the Firefox application's directory is not supported.
This release provides the Next-Generation Java plugin. If youhave been using the classic plugin, see theNotes for further information.
The location of the plugin file for Oracle Solaris varies accordingto the processor of the underlying platform.
| Processor | Location of File |
|---|---|
| SPARC | /usr/jdk/instances/jdk1.7.0_<version>/jre/lib/sparc/libnpjp2.so |
| x64/EM64T | /usr/jdk/instances/ |
If you are using a 32-bit Firefox, you should use the 32-bitJava Plugin (from thelib/sparc or thelib/i386 directory). To determine which version ofFirefox you are running, launch the application, and select themenu itemHelp -> About Mozilla Firefox.
To install the Java Plugin follow these steps:
1. Exit Firefox.
2. Uninstall any previous installations of JavaPlugin.
Only one Java Plugin can be used at a time. When you want to usea different plugin, or version of a plugin, remove the symboliclinks to any other versions and create a fresh symbolic link to thenew one.
Remove the symbolic links (or move them to another directory) tolibjavaplugin-oji.so andlibnpjp2.so fromthe Firefoxplugins directory.
3. Create a symbolic link to the Java Plugin in theFirefoxplugins directory.
Create a symbolic link to the Java Pluginlibnpjp2.so file in the Firefoxpluginsdirectory. Substitute the appropriatelibnpjp2.so fileaccording to the previous table. For example, for a 32-bit JRE onan x64/EM64T processor:
cd<Firefox>/plugins ln -s<JRE>/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so .
4. Start the Firefox browser.
Typeabout:plugins in the browser's Location bar toconfirm that the Java Plugin is loaded.
<JRE>/plugin/sparc/javaplugin-oji.so (SPARC)<JRE>/plugin/i386/javaplugin-oji.so (x64/EM64T)This file should no longer be used and all symbolic links to itshould be removed.
libnpjp2.so) requiresFirefox 3 or above. Firefox 2.x (or older) requires the classicplugin (libjavaplugin-oji.so). The classic plugin isno longer supported. You can get Firefox 3 throughsunfreeware.com. Theyhave a full list ofFirefoxpackages available.
