Description

These functions operate on wide-character strings terminated bywchar_tNULL characters. Duringappending or copying, these routines do not check for an overflow conditionof the receiving string. In the following,ws,ws1, andws2 pointto wide-character strings terminated by awchar_t NULL.

wcscasecmp(),wcsncasecmp()

Thewcscasecmp() function is the wide-character equivalent of thestrcasecmp(3C) function. Itcompares the wide-character string pointed to byws1 to the wide-character stringpointed to byws2, ignoring case differences. It returns 0 if thewide-character strings atws1 is equal tows2 except for case differences.It returns a positive integer ifws1 is greater thanws2 anda negative integer ifws1 is smaller thanws2, ignoring case.

Thewcsncasecmp() function is the wide-character equivalent of thestrncasecmp(3C) function. Itcompares at mostn wide-characters from the wide-character string pointed to byws1to the wide-character string pointed to byws2, while ignoring differences incase. It returns 0 if the wide-character strings atws1 andws2,truncated to at most lengthn, are equal except for case distinctions. Itreturns a positive integer if truncatedws1 is greater thanws2 anda negative integer if truncatedws1 is smaller thanws2, ignoring case.

wcscat(),wscat()

Thewcscat() andwscat() functions append a copy of the wide-character stringpointed to byws2 (including the terminating null wide-character code) to theend of the wide-character string pointed to byws1. The initial wide-character codeofws2 overwrites the null wide-character code at the end ofws1.If copying takes place between objects that overlap, the behavior is undefined.Both functions returns1; no return value is reserved to indicate an error.

wcsncat(),wsncat()

Thewcsncat() andwsncat() functions append not more thann wide-character codes(a null wide-character code and wide-character codes that follow it are notappended) from the array pointed to byws2 to the end of thewide-character string pointed to byws1. The initial wide-character code ofws2overwrites the null wide-character code at the end ofws1. A terminatingnull wide-character code is always appended to the result. Both functions returnws1;no return value is reserved to indicate an error.

wcscmp(),wscmp()

Thewcscmp() andwscmp() functions compare the wide-character string pointed to byws1 to the wide-character string pointed to byws2. The sign ofa non-zero return value is determined by the sign of the difference betweenthe values of the first pair of wide-character codes that differ inthe objects being compared. Upon completion, both functions return an integer greaterthan, equal to, or less than zero, if the wide-character string pointedto byws1 is greater than, equal to, or less than the wide-characterstring pointed to byws2.

wcsncmp(),wsncmp()

Thewcsncmp() andwsncmp() functions compare not more thann wide-character codes(wide-character codes that follow a null wide character code are not compared)from the array pointed to byws1 to the array pointed to byws2. The sign of a non-zero return value is determined by thesign of the difference between the values of the first pair ofwide-character codes that differ in the objects being compared. Upon successful completion,both functions return an integer greater than, equal to, or less than zero,if the possibly null-terminated array pointed to byws1 is greater than,equal to, or less than the possibly null-terminated array pointed to byws2.

wcscpy(),wscpy(),wcpcpy()

Thewcscpy(),wscpy(), andwcpcpy() functions copy the wide-character string pointed tobyws2 (including the terminating null wide-character code) into the array pointedto byws1. If copying takes place between objects that overlap, the behavioris undefined.

Thewcscpy() andwscpy() functions returnws1. Thewcpcpy() function returns apointer to the terminating null wide-character code copied intows1.

wcsncpy(),wsncpy(),wcpncpy()

Thewcsncpy(),wsncpy(), andwcpncpy() functions copy not more thann wide-charactercodes (wide-character codes that follow a null wide character code are notcopied) from the array pointed to byws2 to the array pointed tobyws1. If copying takes place between objects that overlap, the behavioris undefined.

If the array pointed to byws2 is a wide-character string thatis shorter thann wide-character codes, null wide-character codes are appended tothe copy in the array pointed to byws1, until a totaln wide-character codes are written. Thewcsncpy() andwsncpy() functions returnws1. Thewcpncpy() function returns a pointer to the last wide character written.

wcsdup()

Thewcsdup() function is the wide-character equivalent of thestrdup(3C) function. Itreturns a pointer to a new wide-character string whose initial contents is aduplicate of the wide-character string pointed to bys. Memory for thenew wide-character string is allocated withmalloc(3C) and can be freed with acall tofree(3C). A null pointer is returned anderrno set toENOMEM if there is insufficient memory available for the duplicate string.

wcslen(),wslen(),wcsnlen()

Thewcslen() andwslen() functions compute the number of wide-character codes inthe wide-character string to whichws points, not including the terminating nullwide-character code. Both functions returnws; no return value is reserved to indicatean error.

Thewcsnlen() is the wide-character equivalent of thestrnlen(3C) function. It returnsthe number of wide-characters in the string pointed to byws, notincluding the terminating null wide-character code but at mostmaxlen, while neverlooking beyond the firstmaxlen characters. It returnsmaxlen if there isno terminating null wide-character code among the firstmaxlen wide characters pointed tobyws.

wcschr(),wschr()

Thewcschr() andwschr() functions locate the first occurrence ofwc inthe wide-character string pointed to byws. The value ofwc mustbe a character representable as a typewchar_t and must be awide-character code corresponding to a valid character in the current locale. Theterminating null wide-character code is considered to be part of the wide-characterstring. Upon completion, both functions return a pointer to the wide-character code,or a null pointer if the wide-character code is not found.

wcsrchr(),wsrchr()

Thewcsrchr() andwsrchr() functions locate the last occurrence ofwc inthe wide-character string pointed to byws. The value ofwc mustbe a character representable as a typewchar_t and must be awide-character code corresponding to a valid character in the current locale. Theterminating null wide-character code is considered to be part of the wide-characterstring. Upon successful completion, both functions return a pointer to the wide-charactercode, or a null pointer ifwc does not occur in the wide-characterstring.

windex(),wrindex()

Thewindex() andwrindex() functions behave the same aswschr() andwsrchr(),respectively.

wcspbrk(),wspbrk()

Thewcspbrk() andwspbrk() functions locate the first occurrence in the widecharacter string pointed to byws1 of any wide-character code from thewide-character string pointed to byws2. Upon successful completion, the function returns apointer to the wide-character code, or a null pointer if no wide-charactercode fromws2 occurs inws1.

wcswcs()

Thewcswcs() function locates the first occurrence in the wide-character string pointedto byws1 of the sequence of wide-character codes (excluding the terminatingnull wide-character code) in the wide-character string pointed to byws2. Upon successfulcompletion, the function returns a pointer to the located wide-character string, ora null pointer if the wide-character string is not found. Ifws2points to a wide-character string with zero length, the function returnsws1.

wcsspn(),wsspn()

Thewcsspn() andwsspn() functions compute the length of the maximum initialsegment of the wide-character string pointed to byws1 which consists entirelyof wide-character codes from the wide-character string pointed to byws2. Bothfunctions return the lengthws1; no return value is reserved to indicatean error.

wcscspn(),wscspn()

Thewcscspn() andwscspn() functions compute the length of the maximum initialsegment of the wide-character string pointed to byws1 which consists entirelyof wide-character codesnot from the wide-character string pointed to byws2. Bothfunctions return the length of the initial substring ofws1; no returnvalue is reserved to indicate an error.

wcstok(),wstok()

A sequence of calls to thewcstok() andwstok() functions break thewide-character string pointed to byws1 into a sequence of tokens, eachof which is delimited by a wide-character code from the wide-character stringpointed to byws2.

Default and other standards

The third argument points to a caller-providedwchar_t pointer into which thewcstok() function stores information necessary for it to continue scanning the samewide-character string. This argument is not available with the XPG4 and SUSversions ofwcstok(), nor is it available with thewstok() function. Seestandards(5).

The first call in the sequence hasws1 as its first argument,and is followed by calls with a null pointer as their firstargument. The separator string pointed to byws2 may be different fromcall to call.

The first call in the sequence searches the wide-character string pointed tobyws1 for the first wide-character code that isnot contained inthe current separator string pointed to byws2. If no such wide-charactercode is found, then there are no tokens in the wide-character string pointedto byws1, andwcstok() andwstok() return a null pointer. Ifsuch a wide-character code is found, it is the start of thefirst token.

Thewcstok() andwstok() functions then search from that point for awide-character code thatis contained in the current separator string. If nosuch wide-character code is found, the current token extends to the endof the wide-character string pointed to byws1, and subsequent searches for atoken will return a null pointer. If such a wide-character code isfound, it is overwritten by a null wide character, which terminates thecurrent token. Thewcstok() andwstok() functions save a pointer to the followingwide-character code, from which the next search for a token will start.

Each subsequent call, with a null pointer as the value of thefirst argument, starts searching from the saved pointer and behaves as describedabove.

Upon successful completion, both functions return a pointer to the first wide-charactercode of a token. Otherwise, if there is no token, a nullpointer is returned.
