Thewalkcontext() function walks the call stack pointed to byuptr, whichcan be obtained by a call togetcontext(2) or from a signal handlerinstalled with theSA_SIGINFO flag. Thewalkcontext() function calls the user-suppliedfunctionoperate_func for each routine found on the call stack and eachsignal handler invoked. The user function is passed three arguments: the PC atwhich the call or signal occurred, the signal number that occurred atthis PC (0 if no signal occurred), and the third argument passedtowalkcontext(). If the user function returns a non-zero value,walkcontext() returnswithout completing the callstack walk.
Theaddrtosymstr() function attempts to convert a PC into a symbolic representationof the form
objname'funcname+0xoffset[0xPC]
whereobjname is the module in which the PC is located,funcnameis the name of the function, andoffset is the offset fromthe beginning of the function. Theobjname,funcname, andoffset values areobtained fromdladdr(3C) and might not always be present. The resulting stringis written to the user-supplied buffer. Should the length of the string belarger than the user-supplied buffer, only the portion of the string thatwill fit is written and null-terminated.
Theprintstack() function useswalkcontext() to print a symbolic stack trace tothe specified file descriptor. This is useful for reporting errors from signalhandlers. Theprintstack() function usesdladdr1() (seedladdr(3C)) to obtain symbolic symbolnames. As a result, only global symbols are reported as symbol namesbyprintstack().
Thebacktrace() function useswalkcontext() to generate a stack's program counter valuesfor the calling thread and place these values into the array specifiedby the buffer argument. Thesize argument specifies the maximum number of programcounters that will be recorded. This function is provided for compatibilitywith the GNUlibc used on Linux systems,glibc.
Thebacktrace_symbols() function translates the numerical program counter values previously recorded bya call tobacktrace() in thebuffer argument, and converts, where possible,each PC to a string indicating the module, function and offset of eachcall site. The number of symbols present in the array must bepassed in with thesize argument.
The set of strings is returned in an array obtained from acall tomalloc(3C). It is the responsibility of the caller to passthe returned pointer tofree(). The individual strings must not befreed. Sincemalloc() is used to obtain the needed space, thisfunction is MT-Safe rather than Async-Signal-Safe and cannot be used reliably froma signal handler. This function is provided forglibc compatibility.
Thebacktrace_symbols_fd() function translates the numerical program counter values previously recorded bya call tobacktrace() in the buffer argument, and converts, where possible,each PC to a string indicating the module, function, and offset of eachcall site. These strings are written to the file descriptor specified inthefd argument. This function is provided forglibc compatibility.
Upon successful completion,walkcontext() andprintstack() return 0. Ifwalkcontext() cannotread the stack or the stack trace appears corrupted, both functions return-1.
Theaddrtosymstr() function returns the number of characters necessary to hold theentire string representation of the passed in address, irrespective of the sizeof the user-supplied buffer.
Thebacktrace() function returns the number of stack frames captured.
Thebacktrace_symbols() function returns a pointer to an array containing string representationsof the calling sequence.
No error values are defined.
Thewalkcontext() function is typically used to obtain information about the callstack for error reporting, performance analysis, or diagnostic purposes. Many library functionsare not Async-Signal-Safe and should not be used from a signal handler.Ifwalkcontext() is to be called from a signal handler, careful programming isrequired. In particular,stdio(3C) andmalloc(3C) cannot be used.
Thewalkstack(),addrtosymstr(),printstack(),backtrace(), andbacktrace_symbols_fd() functions are Async-Signal-Safe and canbe called from a signal handler. Thestring representation generated byaddrtosymstr() and displayed byprintstack(),backtrace_symbols() andbacktrace_symbols_fd() isunstable and will change depending on the information available in the modulesthat comprise the stack trace.
Tail-call optimizations on SPARC eliminate stack frames that would otherwise be present. For example, if the code is of the form
