These functions provide portable access to the members of thestdio(3C)FILEstructure.
The__fbufsize() function returns in bytes the size of the buffer currentlyin use by the given stream.
The__flbf() function returns non-zero if the stream is line-buffered.
The__fpending function returns in bytes the amount of output pending ona stream.
The__fpurge() function discards any pending buffered I/O on the stream.
The__freadable() function returns non-zero if it is possible to read froma stream.
The__freading() function returns non-zero if the file is open readonly, orif the last operation on the stream was a read operation suchasfread(3C) orfgetc(3C). Otherwise it returns 0.
The__fsetlocking() function allows the type of locking performed bystdio ona given stream to be controlled by the programmer.
Iftype isFSETLOCKING_INTERNAL,stdio performs implicit locking around every operation onthe given stream. This is the default system behavior on thatstream.
Iftype isFSETLOCKING_BYCALLER,stdio assumes that the caller is responsible formaintaining the integrity of the stream in the face of access bymultiple threads. If there is only one thread accessing the stream,nothing further needs to be done. If multiple threads are accessing thestream, then the caller can use theflockfile(),funlockfile(), andftrylockfile() functionsdescribed on theflockfile(3C) manual page to provide the appropriate locking. Inboth this and the case wheretype isFSETLOCKING_INTERNAL,__fsetlocking() returns theprevious state of the stream.
Iftype isFSETLOCKING_QUERY,__fsetlocking() returns the current state of the streamwithout changing it.
The__fwritable() function returns non-zero if it is possible to write ona stream.
The__fwriting() function returns non-zero if the file is open write-only orappend-only, or if the last operation on the stream was a writeoperation such asfwrite(3C) orfputc(3C). Otherwise it returns 0.
The_flushlbf() function flushes all line-buffered files. It is used whenreading from a line-buffered file.
Although the contents of thestdio FILE structure have always been private tothestdio implementation, some applications have needed to obtain information about astdio stream that was not accessible through a supported interface. These applications haveresorted to accessing fields of theFILE structure directly, rendering them possiblynon-portable to new implementations ofstdio, or more likely, preventing enhancements tostdio that would cause those applications to break.
In the 64-bit environment, theFILE structure is opaque. The functionsdescribed here are provided as a means of obtaining the information thatup to now has been retrieved directly from theFILE structure. Because they are based on the needs of existing applications (such asmhandemacs), they may be extended as other programs are ported. Although they may still be non-portable to other operating systems, they willbe compatible from each Solaris release to the next. Interfaces that aremore portable are under development.
