Thegettext(),dgettext(), anddcgettext() functions attempt to retrieve a target stringbased on the specifiedmsgid argument within the context of a specificdomain and the current locale. The length of strings returned bygettext(),dgettext(), anddcgettext() is undetermined until the function is called. Themsgidargument is a null-terminated string.
Thengettext(),dngettext(), anddcngettext() functions are equivalent togettext(),dgettext(), anddcgettext(), respectively, except for the handling of plural forms. These functions workonly with GNU-compatible message catalogues. Thengettext(),dngettext(), anddcngettext() functionssearch for the message string using themsgid1 argument as the keyand then argument to determine the plural form. If no messagecatalogues are found,msgid1 is returned ifn == 1, otherwisemsgid2is returned.
TheNLSPATH environment variable (seeenviron(5)) is searched in its entirety firstfor the location of theLC_MESSAGES catalogue. The setting of theLC_MESSAGEScategory of the current locale determines the locale used bygettext()anddgettext() for string retrieval. IfNLSPATH contains%L and the currentvalue of it is a canonical locale name to an obsoleted Solaris localename as described inlocale_alias(5) and there is no message catalog forthe canonical locale name, for a better backward compatibility,gettext() anddgettext() usethe obsoleted Solaris locale names in place for%L as aliases forthe canonical locale name and try to locate the desired message catalogue.If that still does not yield a message catalogue and the value of%L is an accepted and supported locale name alias as described inlocale_alias(5), the matching canonical locale name is used in place for%L tolocate the desired message catalogue. Thecategory argument determines the localeused bydcgettext( ). IfNLSPATH is not defined and the current localeis “C”,gettext(),dgettext(), anddcgettext() simply return the message string thatwas passed. In a locale other than “C”, ifNLSPATHis not defined or if a message catalogue is not found inany of the components specified byNLSPATH, the routines search for themessage catalogue using the scheme described in the following paragraph.
TheLANGUAGE environment variable is examined in its entirety to determine theGNU-compatible message catalogues to be used. The value ofLANGUAGE is alist of locale names separated by a colon (':') character. IfLANGUAGE is defined, each locale name is tried in the specified order andif a GNU-compatible message catalogue is found, it is used to returntarget strings. If no GNU-compatible message catalogue is found for alllocales specified in theLANGUAGE and if there are accepted and supportedlocale name aliases for any of the locale names in theLANGUAGE, asspecified inlocale_alias(5) and in the same manner as described in theNLSPATH description at the above for%L and the current locale name, thelocale name aliases are used once again to search corresponding GNU-compatible message catalogues. If a GNU-compatible message catalogue is found butfailed to find a correspondingmsgid, themsgid string is returned. IfLANGUAGE is not defined or if a Solaris message catalogue is foundor no GNU-compatible message catalogue is found in processingLANGUAGE, the pathnameused to locate the message catalogue isdirname/locale/category/domainname.mo, wheredirname is thedirectory specified bybindtextdomain(),locale is a locale name, andcategory is eitherLC_MESSAGES ifgettext(),dgettext(),ngettext(), ordngettext() is called, orLC_XXX wherethe name is the same as the locale category name specified bythecategory argument todcgettext() ordcngettext(). In this last stage of searchof message catalogue, if there is no message catalogue found with thelocale name and if the locale name has aliases as described inlocale_alias(5), the locale name aliases are used in place of the localename to locate the message catalogue in the same manner as describedin the above for the processing of the locale name aliases ofthe locales defined at theLANGUAGE.
Forgettext() andngettext(), the domain used is set by the lastvalid call totextdomain(). If a valid call totextdomain() has notbeen made, the default domain (calledmessages) is used.
Fordgettext(),dcgettext(),dngettext(), anddcngettext(), the domain used is specified bythedomainname argument. Thedomainname argument is equivalent in syntax and meaning tothedomainname argument totextdomain(), except that the selection of the domainis valid only for the duration of thedgettext(),dcgettext(),dngettext(), ordcngettext() function call.
Thetextdomain() function sets or queries the name of the current domainof the activeLC_MESSAGES locale category. Thedomainname argument is anull-terminated string that can contain only the characters allowed in legal filenames.
Thedomainname argument is the unique name of a domain on thesystem. If there are multiple versions of the same domain on onesystem, namespace collisions can be avoided by usingbindtextdomain(). Iftextdomain()is not called, a default domain is selected. The setting of domain madeby the last valid call totextdomain() remains valid across subsequent callstosetlocale(3C), andgettext().
Thedomainname argument is applied to the currently activeLC_MESSAGES locale.
The current setting of the domain can be queried without affecting thecurrent state of the domain by callingtextdomain() withdomainname set tothe null pointer. Callingtextdomain() with adomainname argument of a nullstring sets the domain to the default domain (messages).
Thebindtextdomain() function binds the path predicate for a message domaindomainnameto the value contained indirname. Ifdomainname is a non-empty stringand has not been bound previously,bindtextdomain() bindsdomainname withdirname.
Ifdomainname is a non-empty string and has been bound previously,bindtextdomain() replaces the old binding withdirname. Thedirname argument canbe an absolute or relative pathname being resolved whengettext(),dgettext(), ordcgettext() are called. Ifdomainname is a null pointer or anempty string,bindtextdomain() returnsNULL. User defined domain names cannot begin withthe stringSYS_. Domain names beginning with this string are reserved forsystem use.
Thebind_textdomain_codeset() function can be used to specify the output codeset formessage catalogues for domaindomainname. Thecodeset argument must be avalid codeset name that can be used for theiconv_open(3C) function, ora null pointer. If thecodeset argument is the null pointer,bind_textdomain_codeset()returns the currently selected codeset for the domain with the namedomainname. It returns a null pointer if a codeset has not yet beenselected. Thebind_textdomain_codeset() function can be used multiple times. If usedmultiple times with the samedomainname argument, the later call overrides the settingsmade by the earlier one. Thebind_textdomain_codeset() function returns a pointer toa string containing the name of the selected codeset. The string isallocated internally in the function and must not be changed by theuser.
The external variables_nl_msg_cat_cntr and_nl_domain_bindings are provided for the compatibility withthe GNUgettext() implementation.
Thegettext(),dgettext(), anddcgettext() functions return the message string if thesearch succeeds. Otherwise they return themsgid string.
Thengettext(),dngettext(), anddcngettext() functions return the message string if thesearch succeeds. If the search fails,msgid1 is returned ifn== 1. Otherwisemsgid2 is returned.
The individual bytes of the string returned bygettext(),dgettext(),dcgettext(),ngettext(),dngettext(), ordcngettext() can contain any value other thanNULL. Ifmsgid is a null pointer, the return value is undefined. The stringreturned must not be modified by the program and can be invalidatedby a subsequent call tobind_textdomain_codeset() orsetlocale(3C). If thedomainnameargument todgettext(),dcgettext(),dngettext(), ordcngettext() is a null pointer, the thedomain currently bound bytextdomain() is used.
The normal return value fromtextdomain() is a pointer to a stringcontaining the current setting of the domain. Ifdomainname is a nullpointer,textdomain() returns a pointer to the string containing the current domain.Iftextdomain() was not previously called anddomainname is a null string,the name of the default domain is returned. The name of thedefault domain ismessages. Iftextdomain() fails, a null pointer is returned.
The return value frombindtextdomain() is a null-terminated string containingdirname orthe directory binding associated withdomainname ifdirname isNULL. If nobinding is found, the default return value is/usr/lib/locale. Ifdomainnameis a null pointer or an empty string,bindtextdomain() takes no actionand returns a null pointer. The string returned must not be modifiedby the caller. Ifbindtextdomain() fails, a null pointer is returned.
These functions impose no limit on message length. However, a textdomainnameis limited toTEXTDOMAINMAX (256) bytes.
Thegettext(),dgettext(),dcgettext(),ngettext(),dngettext(),dcngettext(),textdomain(), andbindtextdomain() functions canbe used safely in multithreaded applications, as long assetlocale(3C) is not beingcalled to change the locale.
Thegettext(),dgettext(),dcgettext(),textdomain(), andbindtextdomain() functions work with both Solarismessage catalogues and GNU-compatible message catalogues. Thengettext(),dngettext(),dcngettext(), andbind_textdomain_codeset() functions work only with GNU-compatible message catalogues. Seemsgfmt(1) forinformation about Solaris message catalogues and GNU-compatible message catalogues.
